Munchausen Syndrome is very rare. You might see one case in a decade if not your entire career. If this doctor is reporting multiple cases the problem likely isn’t the parents, it’s the doctor.

In fairness this is someone who takes child abuse referrals within their system. So they’d probably be expected to see more. Like if any doctor suspects any form of abuse including munchausen’s in the entire system it’d get referred to them. Healthcare workers are mandatory reporters and can be held criminally liable if they don’t report their concerns for child abuse, and the thresholds for that are often poorly defined.

In addition to investigating this person, the whole health system needs to be looked at, like where are all these reports for child abuse coming from in the first place. This person just takes the referrals, other people must be generating them (not necessarily doctors, any Healthcare worker can). There might need to be education system wide if there’s an over reporting problem.

Basically it’s hard to get a sense for what’s going on here, health privacy laws make it difficult to come to an informed opinion as an outside observer, but it sounds like the health system as a whole needs a thorough investigation here.

You’re not wrong. And you’re probably correct there’s going to potentially be more cases reported with this woman. However, she already had an open investigation into claims of over diagnosis of this disorder and then had this happen.

You’re right we need more info but just seems sus .

Totally agree with you. It just seems like there has to be more going on than just this one person. Sometimes it can be easy to place all the blame on one person when there’s a complex system issue underlying it too, especially something as complex as a hospital/Healthcare system.

Hmmm. Need to look at the care other patients of Dr. Esernio-Jenssen are getting. She could be putting a lot of kids in danger.
