I’m fairly new and don’t 100% understand it yet, but instances are run on servers that require money. Are we heading towards seeing ads or subscriptions to raise funds instead of relying on donations to cover overhead?

I would too. But only now that I’ve gotten a little familiar with how the fediverse works in practice. For entirely new users, asking them to pay for the Lemmy learning curve is a lot.
Yes. I guess my perspective is coming from someone who has a) been on Reddit for years and b) on Lemmy for a while. I felt the pain when my needy communities went dark and I lost ability to troubleshoot to consult and to bond. Reddit and now Lemmy are not for pics of cats for me. So I get the value I get from it.
