Under the settlements, drivers outside New York City (OP note: in New York state, I assume) will receive a minimum $26 per hour during rides and for sick leave, adjusted annually for inflation.
Does my of this settlement go to reimburse the people who were stolen from, or does it all go to some government agency?
You should do stand-up!
Employee misclassification is theft
Aside from that, which would let them avoid paying the state government money, they committed theft on their employees:
James accused Uber and Lyft of improperly deducting sales taxes and fees for a workers compensation fund from drivers’ payments, though passengers should have paid those amounts.
Sales tax is always supposed to be levied on the customer, because it’s a tax on being poor.
Good, fuck app-based businesses
I’d say “fuck predatory app-based businesses”. Is there something inherently wrong with app-based businesses?
Let’s run our business on an app, but we’ll make some extra money harvesting their private data too!
Again predatory how is app business itself a bad thing
I think we’d need an example of an ethical app company first
Mozilla services? Maybe. Tbh I don’t thinks there’s a single one.
Data harvesting
Yes that is predatory not arguing that lol
No but it’s lemmy, so automatically it’s bad if it’s a for-profit company.
Is this an actual punishment or a slap on the wrist? I can’t seem to tell anymore because initially I think, “wow, that’s a lot of money.” But then I am reminded of how much money some of these companies are hoarding.
It’s a settlement. The amount of money is not that small, but it ends the investigation into whether drivers should be classified as employees rather than contractors. As the article states, their stock prices soared after this, that tells you everything you need to know.
The article covers this.
The payments equal a little under 1% of Uber’s and Lyft’s annual revenue.
Keep in mind these companies pooled their resources in California to spend $90 million to defeat the proposition that would have classified drivers as employees, when I’m pretty sure just paying their drivers a fair wage would have cost less. Now this??? How the fuck can these companies think it’s in their best interest to waste all this money on settlements and ballot measures, when they could make the issue disappear for less money, by just being decent humans and paying their employees a fair living wage? Not only would they save money, but they’d potentially end up with a happy and loyal staff. Oh the humanity!
