Hi, is using cryptomator with a cloud service any good ? Do you have better alternatives ?
I’ve been using it for a couple of years with Google Drive on Windows, on a near-daily basis, with approximately 300GB across multiple vaults - some very large files, some very small text files (think Obsidian).
I have not encountered any errors / issues / lost data. I do frequently get a message where it tells me it can’t lock the vault because it’s still “in use”, but I just Force Lock and go on with my day.
I second this. Using it with Pcloud. Syncs just fine, and even if it does not fully sync from one computer, I haven’t had it corrupt while using the files.
Same here
Ok thank you, I’m going to try it.
I have encountered errors. But I still would recommend it. It‘s a good app. However, I moved back to Veracrypt.
The problem with veracrypt is that for every small edit I have to reupload the entire disk?
Yes. And that’s why I use Cryptomator too. It’s a nice alternative and I haven’t got issues with it yet. I only store a few GB though but it’s good for me.
Fair point actually.
restic or duplicati might be a solution for you for that.
What errors?
Files not being fully synced and ended up corrupt. This happened especially on iOS with documents actively worked on like for example numbers sheets.
Good to know.
It’s the super very best of the best. Beside encryption it also uploads stuff faster than shit like folder sync pro. Never has any errors. One of my most favorite open source apps, love it so much I even paid for the supporter certificate. (And I don’t pay for lots of free stuff cuz I’m poor). If they would allow single folder sync on android it would also be much better than nextcloud.
I use rclone.
I havent had a problem for the past couple years I used it but that doesnt mean problems dont occur so do yourself a favor and backup locally too you can encrypt that backup with veracrypt or any other encryption software you like. If I had to nitpick, the android app isnt the best visually speaking but it gets the job done. As for alternatives, an e2e encrypted cloud provider that you trust is probably what you would like that or a self hosted solution but I’m not familiar enough to speak for that
I’ve used it for years, love it!
I’ve never had issues.
