    You’re missing the point.

    There of course are racist individuals in both parties and there are also upstanding members of each party, yes despite what some media implies not all GOP politicians are racist. For example McCain through his life didn’t show anything that would imply racism[1].

    Anyway in the past it happened that many Democrat members were racist. The party decided to not allow it. GOP saw this as an opportunity to gain new voters to appeal to people who were upset about DNC change. This GOP move was called the southern strategy and it did cause many voters to change the party.

    This is the main difference. It isn’t about individuals but about each party stance on the issue.

    It is sad that it got even worse. For example in 2016 GOP was actually seeing that they were losing voters so they started being open to accept LGBT and you could see that in debates, but then trump appeared and showed they can go even further right and get voters from there.

    I think they are holding to trump so strongly, because they believe that they will lose everyone if they change now.

    [1] Best case was when running for president during a town hall when one of his voters was attacking Obama, he tactfully corrected her and said that Obama is also a good guy, and they just have difference in opinion what’s best for the country.
