Syria is home to multiple ethnic and religious communities, often pitted against each other by Assad’s state and years of war. Many of them fear the possibility that Sunni Islamist extremists will take over. The country is also fragmented among disparate armed factions, and foreign powers from Russia and Iran to the United States, Turkey and Israel all have their hands in the mix.

For years, al-Sharaa worked to consolidate power, while bottled up in the province of Idlib in Syria’s northwest corner as Assad’s Iranian- and Russian-backed rule over much of the country appeared solid.

As Syria’s civil war intensified in 2013, so did al-Golani’s ambitions. He defied al-Baghdadi’s calls to dissolve the Nusra Front and merge it with al-Qaida’s operation in Iraq, to form the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

In 2016, al-Golani revealed his face to the public for the first time in a video message that announced his group was renaming itself Jabhat Fateh al-Sham — the Syria Conquest Front — and cutting its ties to al-Qaida.

“This new organization has no affiliation to any external entity,” he said in the video, filmed wearing military garb and a turban.

With his power consolidated, al-Golani set in motion a transformation that few could have imagined. Replacing his military garb with shirt and trousers, he began calling for religious tolerance and pluralism.

The real test will be the Kurds. Turkey couldn’t openly support HTS but it’s thought that they have al-Golani the green light as they were making no progress with Assad. Turkey won’t want Syria to break up as that would be the start of a new Kurdistan so how will they deal with what comes next.

It’ll also be interesting to see what the West do as he and HTS are currently designated terrorists.

Depends on if the despot is one of ours or not.

Usually if they aren’t then the West is backing the overthrowers. The tricky thing here is we weren’t backing any side so there will be a bit of a diplomatic scramble to figure out where the land lies.

Ultimately as we’ve happily worked with terrorists and despots in the past, we’ll have no issues bending our “morals” to accommodate another one.

Turkiye is also changing its position with Kurds, since the Turkish Ultranationalists openly asked for Ocalan’s release from prison, who is the founder, primary ideologue and the ex-leader of the Kurdish PKK.

The group was affiliated with Al Qaeda and has torched villages of ethnic minorities. Just because he claims (without proof) to do something acceptable, doesn’t mean he’s a fucking hero.

      Sometimes, evil can replace evil.

      Easy on the kool-aid.

It was a joke about superficial similarity between them.

I guess I see it, too used to being on guard for stupid shitty takes from dickheads trying to paint Zelensky in a bad light for stupid reasons.

Could also say he looks like Assad with a beard though
