  • Just to add onto this comment, it’s thought that the Sun is slowly getting hotter and more energetic as it gets older and in approximately 1 billion years, the Sun will be hot enough to render the Earth uninhabitable for life as we know it.

    In approximately 5 billion years, the Sun will reach the end of its life and expand into a red giant, swallowing up Mercury, Venus and potentially Earth in the process. Interestingly, once the Sun reaches this phase of its life, it could potentially warm up some of the outer moons enough for them to have liquid water, if they can hold onto an atmosphere of course.

    Someone please correct me if I said anything wrong, I’m just a casual space nerd and not a professional astronomer.



  • I’m kinda mixed on it so far, I feel like I should’ve gone with something like Endeavour OS or something similar. Using a more commonly used distro would simplify troubleshooting and provide a bigger user base to siphon information from. I don’t have any problems with Bazzite but I’m kinda feeling like I’m missing out by not using something a bit more complex tbh.

    I’ve read about rpm-ostree and my impression is I’d rather not use it to install anything if I can avoid it, which also feeds into my desire to use a different distro.

    Bazzite comes pre-installed with distrobox and boxbuddy, I’ll need to put more effort into learning how to use it. I’ve read up on the basics of it but I haven’t yet put in the effort to fully understand that program.

  • I’m perfectly fine with that, in fact I’d like to learn more about how to use the terminal in detail cause I find it fun. Part of why I switched to Linux is because I’m bored of Windows, among many other issues it has these days. Learning a new OS is fun, I’m enjoying my time with Linux so far.

    You’re the 2nd person to bring up my choice of Bazzite, I don’t have much installed yet so I’m open to switching to another distro if that’ll make things easier for what I want my system to do. I almost installed Endeavour OS but ended up going with Bazzite because I’ve heard that Arch distros can be a pain to keep up, but I’m speaking out of ignorance, I still know barely anything about Linux.

    Basically I want something at least somewhat stable for a Linux noob, but I don’t want something like Ubuntu or Linux mint, I’d prefer a more “intermediate” distro over a beginner one like the previously mentioned distros. Building Arch from scratch is a bit much for me for example, but I don’t want it overly simplified either. What would you recommend for a distro?

You try to change your angle of ascent but you should have thought of that way earlier.

    The poop accelerates. 4,000 feet. NORAD upgrades to DEFCON 3. Concentric circles of fire engulf your city. The poop accelerates. You have broken the sound barrier. 30,000 feet. You no longer take in enough oxygen to sustain consciousness. 60,000 feet. CNN is reporting on all the world records you’ve broken. 200,000 feet. You are no longer alive. The poop accelerates. Your body disintegrates but your poop contrail remains. NASA can no longer track you. You break the light-speed barrier and we can no longer bear witness.

  • Great question!

    No, the Sun’s diameter will expand greatly but it’s mass will remain mostly the same, if anything it’ll be ejecting significant amounts of stellar matter when it turns into a red giant and will be losing mass.

    Mass is what dictates the gravity of a given object. If you replaced the sun with a black hole of the exact same mass, everything in the solar system would retain its exact same orbit outside of those few unfortunate objects that were very close to the sun (much closer than Mercury) when it got swapped out for a black hole of the same mass.

    So even though the Sun will eventually swell up into a red giant and eat most, if not all of the inner planets, it’s gravity will remain the same despite its massively increased diameter, and its gravity will get weaker as the red giant ejects stellar matter over its relatively quick life. Eventually it’ll eject its outer layers, creating a new nebula thanks to the star ejecting all of its outer layers and leaving behind the dead core of a star called a white dwarf. These dead stars are often similar in size to the Earth but typically have a mass close to that of our sun.

This will happen before the Moon is able to leave Earth’s orbit, so it’ll shrink in the sky but odds are it won’t leave the Earth’s orbit before both are destroyed by the expanding sun in the future.

    On top of that, the sun is slowly getting hotter as it gets older, so in approximately 1 billion years, the sun will have gotten hot enough to render most, if not all of the Earth uninhabitable for life as we know it.
