It feels to me like the Tories (and their wealthy mates) have now got to the point where they don’t feel they can rinse the taxpayer for much more without everyone seeing them for the craven vampires they are, so they’re happily stepping back for one or two terms.

In that time Labour will struggle like fuck to get the country back to where it was 14 years ago when the Tories walked back into Number 10, the papers will blame Labour for everything being shit, and the door will be open for the Tories to come back in and carry on the pillaging with coffers that are worth the effort.

I think they’ve hit a point where they’re doing more for shareholder value than for customers.

They’re so scared of iPad chewing into Mac sales that they’ve hobbled iPadOS, leaving it just useful enough to encourage people to buy both. They’re continuing to offer base 8gb RAM, despite it costing them pennies to increase that to 16gb, because they like the money they make from charging for upgrades.

They’re one of the world’s most valuable companies, and they’ve got there by shortchanging customers as much as possible over the past 15 years.

In many ways, I have no problem with what they charge for their devices. What they make is (generally) very high quality and can last for a long, long time. The likes of Amazon and AliExpress have given us a false sense of how expensive things should be.

But I do have a problem with feeling like I’m not getting the most from my purchase.

Like, I have a 6th gen iPad mini. It’s a great little device. But I can’t help thinking how much more useful it could be if Apple had allowed Stage Manager and external display support on it. But why would they when a 256gb version of it puts it on par with a Mac mini. For the majority of what I do, I could be happy with my iPad hooked up to a display, with the ability to side load apps, a la macOS, and the ability to be portable. But Apple don’t want people buying the cheapest they can work with when they can charge twice for both a Mac and and iPad. So they’ve intentionally hobbled the iPad.

And that’s a problem for me.

I won’t hold my breath on Apple using this. It’d destroy their upsell from 8gb process in one fell swoop.

The trouble with YT Premium is how much they’re charging for it.

We used a VPN to get Ukrainian family YTP for a fraction of the price they charge here in the UK. We pay something like £4 a month now for both of our accounts. That would be the better part of £20 a month if we’d done it legit. Fuck that noise.

Sure, it comes with YT Music, but I’ve literally never used that. I have Apple Music and an iPod. So £20 a month JUST TO REMOVE ADS.

I was ok with the Angry Birds franchise right up until the shitty kart racing game they pumped out. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more wretched collection of bare-faced advertising and micro transactions as that fucking piece of shit.

The game was crammed full of new pop songs, and when one would play the game would display a link to buy it from iTunes. I couldn’t let my kid play it, it was just too egregious.

Haven’t touched any of those games since. Which is a shame, because I really enjoyed the original.

I remember buying Bioshock on my iPhone way back in the mists of time, before decent controller support existed for iOS. The on screen controls weren’t great, so I didn’t spend much time playing it, always planning to come back at some point.

Then it got removed from the App Store so completely that it disappeared from my purchased list, and that was that.

Also, while it shows up when I search, it’s not in my App Library at all, which is odd.

I have 16gb on my M2 Air, and 8gb on my 2014 mini. I’m genuinely surprised at how usable that mini still is. Hell, it’s running Sonoma through OCLP, but it’s only when I boot up the Win11 VM I have installed that it really starts to struggle.

Came home from work yesterday and noticed just how much mildew had grown around bedroom window. By some force that I can’t understand, I just walked to the bathroom, picked up the mildew spray and a cloth, and cleaned it. Didn’t even think about, just did it. And now my windows are clean.

Fuck knows.

Oh aye, back in the day we had a text allowance. My first contract allowed me 50 SMS per day, which felt like a lot until you actually started using them. But I’ve had functionally limitless - or actually limitless - SMS for probably twenty years at this point.

I’m lucky if I send five a month, and most of those were intended to be iMessages that failed for whatever reason.

we don’t have per-message charges in the US, so most people continue on using SMS for daily conversations.

We don’t here in the UK either, but we still use data messaging for the most part. I use WhatsApp for my Android friends, iMessage for my iPhone friends, and it’s never a problem.

I upgraded my iPhone XR to a 13 mini last year. I was close to choosing something running Android, but ultimately I just don’t want to jump that far in with Google. And really, there’s not much of an alternative out there.

This is part of the reason I love driving a (BMW) Mini. It’s not the best car in the world, but it looks different to all the other cars. And drives like a go kart.

No ublock for Safari, which, yeah, is Apple’s fault for being dicks, but it still sucks.
