Those things sound super great… but they’re of course all meant to keep you working around the clock, meeting deadlines.

This is not going to be universally true at all big tech-companies. There are places with perfectly reasonable WLB on top of huge salaries and fantastic perks.

These places are usually big enough that you’re going to see extremes on both ends within the same company - some departments with huge deadline pressure cultures, and some with highly relaxed work settings. It can be a bit of a gamble.

True random shuffle would be a terrible idea. No one wants the same track showing up multiple times in a row, which would not be uncommon in true random shuffle.

WFH means less carbon emissions, less time wasted in traffic, and less time literally putting your life at risk from vehicle collisions.

It speaks volumes that all of these problems are car-related. The whole push for WFH is a massive condemnation of how badly people actually feel about the effects of the car-oriented development that the U.S has been spending so much time championing.

My most McGyvered solution to create a bootable USB was to take a really old Android phone and make it into one. Worked surprisingly well, actually.

It’s a tool like any other, appropriate under some circumstances and inappropriate in others.

Growing up, there was an association in my area for common ownership of different types of machinery and other equipment for its members. You paid something like $10 a year, and for that you got to borrow all kinds of things you might need as a home owner, like a wood chopper/splitter, high pressure washer, trailers, leaf blowers, cement mixer, scaffolding etc.

I always thought that was brilliant.

• General purpose LLMs are starting to replace everyday queries I used to posit to Google. Perplexity can be quite good for this.
• Copilot as enhanced autocomplete when writing code. A particularly good use-case is writing tests: with a few test cases already written, a sufficiently good test name will most often generate a well-written test case.
• LLMs for lazy generation of SQL queries can sometimes be quite nice.
• Writing assistance for things I find myself struggling to get written by myself. A writing unblocking tool, if you will.

It’s reducing the effort and time I have to put into some things, and I appreciate that. It’s far from perfect, but it doesn’t have to be perfect to be useful.

Price is unfortunately not a reliable proxy for quality. That’s kind of why communities like BuyItForLife exist.

The next step on the Git-journey is to use interactive rebasing in order to never push these commits in the first place and maintain a clean history to be consumed by the code reviewer.

Squashing is still nice in order to have a one-to-one relationship between commits on the main branch to pull requests merged, imo.

Being able to walk, bike and take transit instead of having to own a car is important for me. I’m not interested in the additional maintenance involved with owning a house, an apartment suits me a lot better. I also like having good access to plenty of things to do in the form of a great selection of restaurants and being close to international transportation options. Good access to nature without having to drive a car is also important to me.

Is this overfitting?

Taking the time to learn how git works on a conceptual level and then how to resolve merge conflicts effectively is a worthwhile investment. Highly recommended
