  • I like the explanation of AI with a pencil and googly eyes. Give the pencil some googly eyes and call it Mohammed, or Carl, and talk to someone with it, using ventriloquism or something, doesn’t have to be good. They will form an emotional connection to the pencil and react, some even violently, if the pencil is broken midconversation in front of them.

That is the reason why people think AI is a thing. That is also why people think a god is a thing. They are wrong in both cases.

Gods are never real in a sense of natural science, they have no body, no voice; they aren’t existant. They exist as an idea, a thought people have.

Gods never work in the physical world, none of them have a will, they can only be used to steer people through the people’s thoughts.

  • The kind of control we are talking about are different. You look at the law, in which I have only little trust, while I look at the ability to manipulate the hardware.

So no, they do not have control over the hardware, they just don’t care that much. They do care if they are inconvenienced in any way, say by a service that disallows some parts that were previously offered. They don’t understand and don’t care, but they do win from some more control over their stuff.

I already live without any of the services you mentioned, I suspect most of Lemmy do. Well, not without YouTube (for me), I guess, but that gets more and more replaced by stuff like peertube.

Millions of Americans would still only occasionally visit those things if they had more options to plan their recreational time. Those options are mostly limited by less free time available while also having less money available. In that regard, and mostly limited to that regard, was then better than now.

  • I’m really sceptical an insurance app can do that. And even if it does work, what’s stopping them from taking the photos from the mail (Don’t start with data protection, if they really want to they can give me a link to upload stuff; or a key to encrypt the mail)?

I agree that an app would be a better user experience. If it would refrain from sending any kind of data other than the photos. Also the photos need to be only the pictures, no EXIF or other stuff.

Also LIDAR in phones? I need to read up on this.

    Edit: ah, apple only. Welp.

  • Warning, no technical stuff, only creed:

I don’t hate Windows in and off itself. For me it represents my first contact with a computer and influences my choice of UI to this day.

I hate what it stands for, which for me is something I call “gated computing”; a restriction of access to computational power and abilities. It turns a machine with near limitless potential, like watching cat videos, sharing how to best build bridges or calculating the bygone cycles of the moon, to a machine that maliciously distracts people while giving a selected few the power of watching over them with ever changing objectives as to why they watch them.

Windows, like few others, eased people into thinking that that was the right way to use a computer all along.

That is why I hate it.
