I ordered mine from http://clove.co.uk/ and they happily shipped to Canada. It has worked fine in Canada, the US, and Barbados (eSIM and physical SIM).

I like the phone a lot, but whenever it’s talked about I’m surprised how many people feel the urge to chime in on why it wouldn’t work for them.

I’d say my biggest gripe is lack of accessories. I paid the huge price for the official screen protector twice. They both cracked relatively quickly and there are pretty much no other options. I’m using a flexible matte-finish screen protector from Amazon now, but it scratches really easily and will slide around on the screen if I keep my phone in my back pocket.

I blame AI. I notice ChatGPT is always trying to put that into my emails. Maybe because of that, I’m also noticing it in lots of emails I get.

I’ve reconsidered my view of Anker being a quality brand. I bought a USB C hub of their’s that was supposed to provide 100W power delivery, but it couldn’t keep a 65W Dell laptop happy. So, I powered the Dell separately and still used the hub. After a while the display port started to cut out.

I’ve also bought a USB C PD cable of their’s that was supposed to support 100W power delivery. With my 85W MacBook I noticed that the cable was starting to get hard (non-bendy) spots in it. Soon after my MacBook would report being unplugged when I did anything that would draw significant power.

Ok, so I go over to Amazon and start looking at reviews that are 2 or 3 stars and holy shit. I got the distinct feeling that these were the real reviews. They’re not good.

Here’s a little script I’ve put in my $PATH, called memsum:

Oooh, don’t do the Pinebook Pro. I think anything Pine64 isn’t unsuitable for a non-tinkerer to be using. Also, if there’s DRM content involved (unsure on Hulu), you’ll probably want to stick with an x86 CPU.

Agreed on the latency issues. I tested SMB and NFS once and found them to be pretty much the same in that regard.

I’m interested to test iSCSI, as for some reason I think it might be better designed for latency.

I’ve found that Dolphin, at least, is much slower with network mounts than a CLI-based “mount”.

Are you leaving behind the dotfiles because you don’t want to bring over any of your old configuration?

For whatever it’s worth, you can remove Snap support from your Ubuntu system. If you want more current software, AppImage and Flatpaks are good for that.

Yeah, I tried naming the files to help, but then Google Photos doesn’t make it easy to see those.

The first picture is the vent outside. Essentially, the hood fan (inside) exhausts into the top of the metal box that’s in the wall. On the other side of that box, around the middle, is a vent that goes outside. Then there’s just a dead-end area of the metal box where some bugs have collected.

It was built in 2016, but maybe they made some initial mistake. Hopefully that’s not it.

I’m not going to be much help ATM, but I believe there is some Google service that allows you to use “foreign” email addresses to log in to a Google account. What that would mean is that you could move your domains away from Google but then keep the Google accounts based on those domains active.

Anyway, fingers crossed I remember about this and actually find the thing I’m taking about and get back to you later today.

I have email going all the way back to 2013 or so, and don’t like the idea of all that information sitting readily available for hacks, warrants, or automated scanning. I move mail older than two years into a local Thunderbird folder to limit what’s sitting online, while also letting me search for recent emails while out and about.

Aside from that, I like that I can still access emails while offline, see all my inboxes, contacts, and calendar in one place. Also, I’ve got enough “apps” that run in the browser.

Actually, sudden account closure without recourse (which Google does) is another reason to make sure I have local copies of email too.

Adopt a cat. The are so, so many excellent cats (and kittens) out there with no home. Save a life instead of bringing another cat into the world.

2nd’ing Vorta+Borg. It’s also really easy to find off-site backup options compatible with Borg. I’m using BorgBase, which offers ridiculously cheap storage, the choice of EU and US destination, and supports the development of both Vorta and Borg.

Pressing the “Home” key will take you to the top of a page (Function+Left on Mac I think), unless I’m misunderstanding what that extension does.

I installed the Fakespot extension and then went looking through my past purchases. It seemed to work really well and called out things as shady for products that I can say, first hand, were actually kind of sketchy.

This is only slightly related - I lost a small number of files with DreamHost object storage, and they were charging more than S3 per GB.

So, I agree you usually get what you pay for, but also make sure the provider is all-in on the product. I think DreamHost really isn’t interested in their virtualized/cloud offerings.

I would say the technology for cloud gaming is here today, but the home internet connections of a lot of people aren’t ready yet.

You witness this a lot with video conferencing. People tell one person their audio/video is shitty, and that person just shrugs and says “yeah, I have bad internet.” In my head I’m screaming “Well, what have you tried?!” or “I see you sitting beside the refrigerator there!”

Ooh, we’re not at the speed of light as a limit yet, are we? Do you mean “point A to point B” on fibre, or do you actually mean full on “routed-over-the-internet”? Even with fibre (which is slower than the speed of light), you’re never going in a straight line. And, at least where I live, you’re often back-tracking across the continent before your traffic makes it to the end destination, with ISPs caring more about saving money than routing traffic quickly.
