I think many people would agree with you. Not all.

Personally, I do think Puerto Rico is basically a colony in all but name. But I know people living in Puerto Rico now who disagree. And I tend to defer to the people actually living in The Place when it comes to discussions like this.

The Wikipedia article on the Puerto Rico statehood movement might also be interesting to you if you didn’t find it yourself already. Puerto Rico has had several referendums in recent years, on one of them:

the fourth referendum, held in November 2012, asked voters (1) whether they wanted to maintain the current political status of Puerto Rico and, if not, (2) which alternative status they prefer. Of the fifty-four percent (54.0%) who voted “No” on maintaining the status quo, 61.11% chose statehood, 33.34% chose free association, and 5.55% chose independence

  • I subscribe to the digital stream of radio stations through my podcast app. WFUV out of New York City, WXRV out of I don’t know where, some random station out of Sydney, Australia I stumbled on that has an EDM DJ on at the same time I’m waking up on the weekends.

I also have Spotify, but I tend to get better recommendations from real human DJs at radio stations.

  • Of course it could happen. Do I think it will happen in the next two months as we get through election season? Nah.

I also don’t think a civil war in modern days would look anything like it did in the 1860s. Aside from the obvious advance in weapons and tactics, there’s no convenient clear line between one half and the other like there was with North/South. It would look more like civil wars do in other countries in the 21st century.

  • So many words and phrases from the president’s speech in the Independence Day movie. My brother has the whole thing memorized, he even did it as a monologue at a speech thing once.

So when I hear a key word or phrase that is part of that speech, I expect to hear my brother dramatically launch into the whole thing even though he now lives halfway across the country from me and he stopped doing the bit every time years ago.

“In less than one hour”, “mankind”, “united in our common interests”, “we will not go quietly”, “today we celebrate”, “annihilation”.

  • Sometimes when I go into the big booze store for wine. If they have samples of a type I’m looking for and it tastes ok, I might buy. They’re usually sampling wines at very acceptable price points.

I always test drive cars before buying.

I change hobbies like I change my clothes. So to keep from sinking way too much into every new hobby, I try to borrow or rent for a bit before buying to make sure it’s a hobby that I will stick with. Example, I picked up dragonboat racing this summer but declined to buy my own $120 paddle and used the clubs slightly heavier, older, paddles that are a little big for me. If I keep going with the team next year, I might buy a paddle. But first will buy a new PFD so I don’t have to wear one of their “one size fits all but it’s going to ride up halfway to u/Vanth’s ears” lifejackets.
