Not to deviate too much from the article, which seemed to focus on how school lunchrooms have adopted outside payment options that use a Ticketmaster inspired fee model, but the lunch “base price” at least is better than I had expected.

The “back in my day” price was 85 cents in the mid 80s to I believe $1.85 by the time I graduated high school in the late 90s. For it to have ok not gone up about 50% since sounds better than the price increase on many other things, especially with food prices of the last few years.

It’s cheaper than the cheapest fast food meal and much less than my cheapest meal at work, while likely being nutritionally somewhere between the 2.

Any of you with kids have a more accurate real cost of feeding kids or more stories of these odd payment schemes?

My HOA is thankfully decent, but I know many have but had positive experiences.

When we’re talking Lemmy instances, packing up and moving is one thing, but when we’re talking residence, who’s going to want their local dictator running things?

People like to hate on things like McDonalds or Budweiser and so on, but with that massive oversight and standardization, you gain a consistent product. With laws and their enforcement, it’s nice to have that consistency.

Worry about red/blue states is bad enough, let alone if we’re talking red/blue streets! Some things are better big and boring.

It may sound silly, but don’t be afraid to practice your writing.

I tried fountain pens for a bit (too fussy for me) and to get practice at it and get my cursive skills back up, I would copy the Duolingo I was doing at the time. That way I got to practice writing and language at the same time. You can always just copy articles or books or whatever.

You could practice copying font styles too if you want something special. If your writing stinks, steal someone else’s! 😁

Nice! Those videos last me forever, too! They’re 2-3 hours, but knock me out in 5-10 minutes, and they’re interesting enough I keep going back until I get through it.

I like the soft touch body of the Inkjoys more, and I feel Energels don’t last as long, but they’re still one of the top budget pens and I like they come in a number of body styles and colors.

That’s awesome! I have fancier pens, but the Precise is always the attention grabber when people write with it.

My gf is a 0.7 user and hates all my 0.5, but I write smaller than she does and the ink lasts longer as a bonus. She writes bigger to enjoy the bold lines.

If you write or sign things a lot, get a couple decent pens. Not expensive ones you’d be upset if you lost them, but not sad, free office pens.

I’ve gotten numerous compliments on my Pilot Precise V5. It’s bold, but easy to read, and if anyone borrows it, they’ll notice it’s smooth and feels nice to use.

The Precise is a rollerball. If you need a ballpoint, Uni Jetstream is great. Pentel Energel or Bic Inkjoys for gel. Grab a pair of each and you can write on near anything.

Zebra Sarasa Grand is a nice metal body with binder clip type clip if you want an upgrade. The above pens all use the same size refill, so if you like one body but a different ink, you can swap them.

The Grand is around $10, the rest you can find for around $5 for a pair.

If you’re using a pen all day, it’s an upgrade you’ll notice whenever you grab a freebie pen and it’s scratchy, the ink skips, and it smudges. It’s a nice upgrade that will feel more luxurious than the price would imply.

I used to try to put on ocean things, but the animals were all too pretty, so I’d end up watching it instead of sleeping.

I’m relatively new to this also, but here’s my take…

I looked at 2 transcriptions I found, listened to the chorus a few times, and tried what you had on my piano vs what the transactions had.

I think it’s better without a slur or glissando. The “hap-py, heal-thy” doesn’t seem to have any legato in the recording, not quite staccato, but the notes sound articulated separately in the B - E - B - E to me.

The transcriptions just have those 4 notes as 1/4 notes, and I feel that is correct.

So this got me to do a quick read on owl drinking…

Owls don’t typically drink, though they can if they want to or need to due to excessive heat or lack of food.

Their water requirements are typically achieved just through eating. While eating their food whole does capture a decent amount of water, metabolism releases hydrogen atoms that combine with oxygen in the body to produce what is called “metabolic water.”

While mammals usually only generate enough metabolic water to flush out our urea, making our urine, birds are much more efficient at producing metabolic water, and they also don’t urinate, they release the uric acid directly. That is the white part of a bird poo. Both of these factors allow birds to generate their own water supply sufficient to sustain them under normal circumstances.

That’s crazy they prefer the bones. It seems like that would have much less nutrition.

No competition does seem like a big advantage though.

Vultures are not typically aggressive. They don’t have the speed and strong talons of other raptors. The great majority of their food is already dead when they eat it. If another predator shows up, they will usually get out of there.

Their look is unconventional, but they are largely designed the only way they can be. If we go by the philosophy of beauty being function over form, it becomes easier to appreciate them.

Their heads are typically bald to avoid parasites and pathogens they would get from sticking their heads inside of some gnarly spaces.

Their legs are also bare, and they wash them with their urea (urohydrosis) to keep them sterile as well, because those feet are also going in the same funk.

Vulture stomach acid also comes in between 0-1 pH, making it 100x as strong as ours. All that bacteria and any parasites are going to be nuked.

So they are basically living, regenerating bio hazard suits that can digest anything. They can eat things contaminated with anthrax and botulism without a care in the world.

Bonus fact: There is a Palm Nut Vulture eats nuts, fruit, and grain in addition to meat.
