I have a huge window with a nice view (in a university owned apartment no less!) so I can afford to skimp on the other walls.

At least five years. Even if the company goes under tomorrow, it’ll be a while before the mainboard is truly obsolete. The main “consumable” would be the battery, which I can probably hack a replacement for if official parts are no longer available.

I’ve had mine (first generation 13" model) for over a year now. I’m very happy with it, and I intend to make it last me through university (3 years) and then some. I would consider it a good investment for me.

You forget that many people live in areas where passenger rail infrastructure is not economically (or practically) viable. I, for one, pity the grain truck that has to drive over an unpaved road.

I don’t know about dangerous, but case-insensitive Unicode comparison is annoying, expensive and probably prone to footguns compared to a simple byte-for-byte equality check.

Obviously, it can be done, but I guess Linux devs don’t consider it worthwhile.

(And yes, all modern filesystems support Unicode. Linux stores them as arbitrary bytes, Apple’s HFS uses… some special bullshit, and Windows uses UTF-16.)

This is what we in the business call a “skill issue.”

There are ways around it, yes. But none of them are plug-and-play unless you’re lucky, and a reliable solution will require a combination of technical ability, stealth and social engineering.

Off the top of my head, for those that are curious:

• The show depicts radiation as similar to a contagion. In real life, once you strip and wash someone exposed to radioactive contaminants, they pose no danger to others.
• The reactor was never in danger of turning into a nuke or rendering huge swathes of Europe uninhabitable. Nuclear explosions only happen under tightly engineered conditions. A big pile of molten reactor slag, while certainly dangerous, can’t turn into a bomb.

However, the utter incompetence of the USSR is very accurate.

On the bright side, having Apollo on his resume should make landing a good dev job (assuming he didn’t have one already) pretty easy.

He still shouldn’t be on the hook for $250k though.

Because my university’s network is cringe, I’m unfortunately forced to run everything on a VPS.

This comes with a financial cost, and I have to carefully ration my computing power, but it does have some upsides - enough that I honestly prefer it now.

• It keeps my desktop sealed away from the wilds of the open Internet. Obviously the risk isn’t that great, but since every service you run represents a potential security hole… it’s nice to have a “disposable” solution like a VPS.
• I don’t have to worry about getting a static IP or using a service like Tailscale in order to talk to my services when away. All I have to do is point my Cloudflare DNS records at my VPS.
• Better uptime. I used to host my blog on my desktop (!) which meant it would go down whenever I rebooted/lost connection/whatever. My VPS restarts once a month to apply updates and is always-on otherwise.
