Fuck off mate, it ain’t a joke.
Fuck off mate, it ain’t a joke.
I apologise for not being clear.
These are the specs of my NAS build:
Node 804 case
16GB DDR4 RAM
Seagate IronWolf Pro 2x 4TB
1TB nvme Samsung 970 evo plus
Gigabyte H610M S2H V2 Intel H610 LGA1200 DDR4 Micro-ATX Motherboardd
DeepCool GAMMAXX GT CPU Cooler A-RGB 120mm PWM Addressable RGB LED Fan Intel AMD
500W EVGA Power Supply Unit / PSU VAT INC
Intel core i5-12400t QS 6c/12t Support ASUS ROG Strix B660-I Gaming WiFi LGA1700.
I want to store all data onto the NAS, past projects, pics, etc.
Set up automatic backups for Windows, Mac
Set up media server (Jellyfin) with Arr apps using a VPN (I’m not sure how to set up a VPN with torrent client)
Set up headscale to access my NAS from anywhere (also, I can’t find any tutorials).
For 3-2-1 backups, I have decided to get an external HDD and use cloud storage.
Self-host services such as Nextcloud, Immich and Bitwarden.

To be clear, I want to do all that; however, I have never done it before, so that any tutorials would be appreciated.
By “Dos and Don’ts,” I’m referring to the settings that should be adjusted for optimal performance, security, and privacy.
Also, any other recommendations would be appreciated.
Thank you for the info. I thought I was going to have a lot of data, but I don’t; that including media, which, as you said, can be reacquired with no need to backup, saves a lot of storage space. I have approximately What do you use for local backup? I’m also looking at cloud storage for offsite backup.

I’m 50/50 regarding tailscale; from what I heard, it’s not fully open source.
For accessing files from your smartphones, I know there’s Nextcloud; what other foss file management tools are available, especially on the phones?
Custom build NAS
Will need to research it as I’m not aware of it. Thanks for the heads up.
Also, privacy-wise, what do you guys use to keep your home server anonymous/hidden and protected? Is VPN enough? If yes, what VPN do you recommend?

You are correct. After speaking to a friend, I have decided to build a new NAS. For less than £200, I can quickly build a decent PC.
I was surprised by that £200 motherboard and CPU custom build; if I directly buy those Pre-built NASs, that would cost me £1K+ with the same motherboard and cpu.
After fighting my old PC the whole day. 😂 I have concluded that not to go with pc. I’m looking at NAS Synology and FreedomBox Pioneer Edition, etc.
Not sure if this exists but digital privacy awareness apps and mini games for educating people. (graphical content)
Those are my old PC specs:
GPU: GeForce GT 240 DDR3 1GB CPU: unknown Motherboard: Lenovo is6xm PSU: Dell L240AS-00 240W RAM: 2x 2GB Storage: 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD
I want to build a low power consumption yet power enough server to run any apps, etc. What upgrades would be the best for my use case?
Thank you for the info. I wasn’t aware of the 3-2-1 backup rule until now.
Sorry for the lack of clarification. I’m mainly into backing up personal and device data and the ability to add media through Plex. I’m also exploring the idea of self-hosting Bitwarden for password management, allowing access to data from anywhere through the internet. Although both Raspberry Pi and NAS are options, privacy concerns lead me to favour Raspberry Pi over NAS.
