  • TL;DR, most people are reasonable and can tell the difference. We cool.

People where English is not their first language get a pass. There is usually a very telling inflection when someone says “females” and means it in the bad way. I would rather help people with their English and explain that it is best to not say it that way, than get upset over our language being unnecessarily complicated.

The context of how female is said is even more confusing. Best way I think is if you are referring to a group of people or a specific person as female(s), that is bad. If you are referring to something about our gender, a description, or something impersonal, then that is fine. “Female anatomy.”, “I hate being female.”, “There was a female guard at the station.”

While it is puts me on edge when I hear it (in that bad context), it isn’t like they called me a cunt or something really foul. It is usually just an immediate red flag that we may be dealing with an incel, but let’s see where this goes. Usually doesn’t take long to get a confirmation on how they really meant it.

  • I get confused every time I install a distro and man isn’t installed by default. I guess I get the bare minimum philosophy, but it throws me off every time. First thing I install is vim, man, git, and probably a couple other things I can’t remember right now.

I do like a decent man page that has examples for us dummies and I have found that they have improved a lot over the years.

  • Like other posts, Factorio. You will lose sleep. Set timers…

Proton and Vulkan make most things easy-ish if you are using Steam. Note that there is a little properties button on the game page that you probably need to use to force it to use Proton so it will install. Proton DB is your friend. Lutris + Wine is pretty good too. Proton is just Wine with enhancements.

You may find Helldivers a lot of fun too, especially if you can play with friends. It is suitably ridiculous in the best way and is sort of human vs aliens/robots. All of the humans (us) play on co-op teams to bring Democracy to the universe. There is a game master from the company that makes it that is leading the war against us. Like I said, suitably ridiculous. Most of my friends are playing it nightly and it will be a big part of our LAN party this weekend.

  • Ok. I tried Firefox for about a month on my Android phone and Mac, but unfortunately had to go back to Chrome on both. I don’t really know what to do at this point. I run enough firewalls and ad blockers that using Chrome has never particularly bothered me from a usability standpoint, but I get the point everyone is trying to make. However, I also don’t want to spend weeks of my life fighting to get yet another open source program to work the same as the “other” program, or find some substitute that I can live with.

I used to use Firefox when I was a kid and loved all of the extensions. However, it seems severely lacking now. I tried to find something to give me group tabs, and found old abandoned projects or some tree thing that made 0 sense to me. I saw an article I think explaining that it is coming? I don’t understand why a feature like this is missing when it used to exist a long time ago. Seems like basic functionality to me. Also, why is the tab bar so big? It takes up a lot of screen real estate.

The thing that killed it for me was the lack of PWA support, which is how I have used Outlook for around 6+ years. I fought with the extension for a while and things sort of worked on and off for a few days here or there, but half the time it would open emails in the main browser anyway. Once it got to the point where Outlook was completely blank and refused to load at all, I gave up. I could never get it to work again. I hoped I could maybe setup the PWA to just be in Chrome or Safari, but it just opens it as a tab in Firefox anyway. I tried, but I am not going to spend hours fighting with it anymore at this point and it would be nice if it was built into the browser instead of a random extension.

It was a better experience on the phone, and I like the bar on the bottom, until I realized it was draining my battery. I found a thread of users complaining about it for the last few months with no fix. I don’t even use the sync feature, but that supposedly is the culprit? Phone kept dying and I barely used it. Looked at the battery usage screen and there it was, almost the top item. I would love to use Firefox on Android, but not at the expense of my battery. Sorry.

  • Wegmans is the same way over here on the East Coast. I can check out with alcohol, someone just needs to come over to scan the override. They always have an attendant or two and I rarely have to wait. Most of the time, as soon as they see the alcohol, they come over before I have even scanned it.

When the machines don’t babysit you and treat you like a theif, it goes astoundingly fast. I love self checkout, for a lot of the same reasons you do, and I get to pack my bags how I like. I avoid places with the insane systems with cameras, sensors, and scales trying to suss out if you are a theif. Especially as they don’t let you scan the next item until the previous is on the other side and don’t have handhelds.

  • I know this was 3 weeks ago, but I can assure you the guilt we feel when we fuck up is horrific. The point isn’t to make excuses, but know that we might need a little more help and patience. A call/text the day (hour…?) before. Send a calendar invite to us, instead of hoping we do it for ourselves. If you care about someone, little things like that go a long way.

Like any disability, or really anyone, we have to understand our limitations. For instance, “asking” me to be a note taker in a meeting is an immediate no. That is a limitation I have and something that can be accommodated. Record the meeting or have someone else do it.

The main problem is we are a bottle of carbonated shiny glitter. Shake us up too much and that part of your brain that can interject before we do something stupid is gone. There goes any emotional control or rational thought. Don’t shake us at all and we will be looking for dopamine source after dopamine source, for better or worse. With enough pressure, we can function good enough. Most of the time…

To give another personal description of what it can be like. Imagine yourself in a loud restaurant full of people. You can hear what each person says, every clink, the music, the AC, footsteps, all of it. That part of your brain that can filter out the noise and allow you to hear the person talking to you at your table? Gone. Every sound. Every sensation. They all have almost equal priority in your brain and you can’t make it go away to just one.

All of us are all over the spectrum of executive dysfunction. I am too tired to give this anymore thought right now, but best thing is to not expect us to magically be better, recognize a meltdown and walk away, and give us awesome problems we can solve! I like fixing things. Hyper focusing on things that matter makes me feel good, especially if it had a real positive impact.

  • I have no idea how we got to it before at I mostly use smaller channels and friends, but I just tapped on the # channel-banner-name at the top, without having to think about it too hard. I have never seen this screen until now, but having separate tabs for all the shared links, media, pins, and members is something I wish more apps did.

I hope they can find a happy middle ground for users, or give users enough customization options where they can configure what works for them. I hate that only 3rd party apps for things like Reddit and Lemmy actually give you control over your interface. Is it too much to ask to have customization options like the old days? 😥
