You can also have settings on your local network. If you’re afraid of your kid casually finding something inappropriate, you can set that up stuff locally without involving the government. A determined kid will still find a way to get stuff, so this is more a safeguard against accidental discovery.

Friend of mine never got their driver’s license. They live in NYC and don’t need one. They also were concerned about safety- they have ADHD and are prone to inattentiveness, and they didn’t want to be driving a car when that manifested.

I have a license but I also live in NYC. I don’t need to drive. It’s pretty great. It’s expensive in time money space and externalized costs, and it’s often less effective than just taking public transit.

Unfortunately most of the US is resistant to investing in mass transit and density, so it’s going to be shitty car-first spaces for a while.

I know I say this a lot but Bandcamp is very good for some usage patterns.

I buy about one album a month for $10. Over the past four years, I now have accumulated a pretty decent library of music that’s mine to keep forever.

They do recommendations and articles that are (or feel like they are) written by real people.

Still happily buying music on Bandcamp. Their discovery stuff is pretty good, too.

Probably pull justices from the lower courts at random to hear individual cases. Much harder to bribe all the judges than like two well known supreme Court justices.

Right. I get that. But I’d like to just pay once. I don’t like subscriptions. But since file storage has ongoing costs, it seems unlikely anyone would offer a pay-once-and-we’ll-host-your-files.

I want to get off Google photos, but I also don’t want to pay a subscription. And I don’t really want to self host. A pay once service I’d accept, but I haven’t seen one with an extremely cursory search. I don’t need any fancy features. Just store the photos, let me see them online, and let me put them in albums.

It’s strangely satisfying when the “this will probably never happen” test case finds a problem during development.

I had tests for deleting that were like

• create item a
• create item b
• delete item a via the code under test
• assert item a is gone
• assert item b is still there

I thought maybe the whole bit with item b was excessive, but sure enough one day I accidentally fucked something up and deleted all the items, and the test pointed it out before the bad code left my local machine.

It was a gift from an old partner. I think she bought a nice bathrobe and then put all the stars on it herself.
