I’m preaching to the choir here on Lemmy but I’m glad that I made the jump to Linux last year

I second the idea of looking at audiobooks, especially autobiographies of successful business people

If you are self hosting front end alternatives like teddit or nitter, libredirect is a great tool. Now, even when I browse the internet on my tablet, the extension will redirect to my server instance instead
Does anyone have any suggestions for a Garmin watch? Alternatively, since the battery is on its last legs, I am probably overdue to buy a new watch if anyone has any FOSS-friendly suggestions (either out the box or after disabling certain sync functionality outside of my local lan)
This happens across all diasporas. I’m sure MAGA-supporting African-Americans would make similarly critical posts about America. I wouldn’t conflate this with the general population
I enjoyed reading the article. To me, the perspective of the owner reminds me of the owners of Brave in that they are Libertarian in ways that seem aligned with mainstream views at a glance but the Venn diagram also overlaps with a disdain for regulation, while portraying a (potential) facade of being eternally infallible and trustworthy while also being a for-profit company.
Elon Musk also comes to mind in that his intelligence leaves him vulnerable to overlooking the nuances of conversations and alternative point of views. I think there’s a general over reliance on artificial intelligence as a savior that will be fully embraced that will lead to large issues in the short/long term for Kagi.
Personally, it always felt a little bit like astroturfing hearing all of the kagi fanboys in every privacy thread, but for what it’s worth, seeing them show up live In the flesh in this thread as well makes me feel a bit less like I’m talking to bots lol
Personally, I self-host my own version of searXng that only uses search engines that don’t track my IP address. I’d say that those results are good enough 90% of the time, and when I need something more granular, I use a publicly hosted version of searXng that uses Google in its results
Did we read the same article? His responses to GDPR were very concerning, and I say that as an American.
I agree with this general sentiment. I think the important thing to remember is that there are very few of us that are completely off the grid and with good reason. You have to pick and choose the battles in this frontier. There are people that have completely removed Google from their life, but still message relatives on Facebook or people that are running graphene OS but still talk to chatGPT on a daily basis.
What’s important is to find the balance that works for you and accept the trade-offs while still living a fruitful life
I’m a recent convert myself. Definitely underrated and if you experience any issues with the publicly hosted versions, they are often resolved through customization if you host your own docker instance
Yeah same. I initially used it for YouTube/Twitter but realized that it’s reinventing the wheel that libredirect already created, and doesnt have the same features like pinging instances or being able to cycle through instances if one goes down.
I still find redirector useful, but now use it for things like redirecting away from guilty pleasure websites or when my locally-hosted teddit doesn’t properly handle internal links.
Tabliss is very underrated. Nowadays, I rarely see my desktop background but always see the “new tab” and so “new tab” serves as the modern desktop background. I use great photos of my city but there are many categories in unsplash
That was my sentiment exactly. The benefits of being able to buy parts to fix a device is more muted when the replacement part cost the same as a buying an entire used phone. Maybe I’m in the dark, but the cost of screens feels inflated and like a deterrent to fixing devices, in spite of it being likely the leading reason for repairs.
Same. Slickdeals and forget it. The website is a bit of a privacy nightmare w/ inserted tracking/referral links for every deal though. I’ve stopped logging in entirely and just use it for emailed alerts.
Great to hear. Preferably from a more neutral source next time. Hard to take it at their word when it’s so editorialized and filled w/ name-calling. And I say this as someone who probably would end up on a watch list if I gave my personal opinion of Elon
To follow through Mastodon/Calckey/Firefish/etc, search for this in your instance:

Feedly is the most user-friendly (albeit also perhaps privacy-unfriendly) option imo. I used them for years before I started self-hosting through FreshRSS. If you are targeting someone unfamiliar, I’d go that route
I’m biased, you could find a Chromebook that fits your requirements (+ chrultrabook requirements) and then wipe ChromeOS and replace it w/ pure Linux. You won’t waste money on hard drive, RAM or CPU but you can get a more modernized-looking unit w/ 2 USB-C ports.
I’m going to continue buying Chromebooks because I can wipe the OS and put Linux on them.
