Rents will rise, but it’s by design.

A decent solution is to install shairport-sync on the Pi and advertise the service over multicast dns (Apple bonjour protocol). This effectively creates an AirPlay device on the network that’s usable from any iDevice. This had a very high “wife approval factor” when I did something similar at home.

15·7 months agoNextcloud - slick web UI and good desktop app. Bit of work to install and maintain the server software but worth it imo.
Syncthing - barebones cross device peer to peer file sync. Simple but works great.
Most unixey option - just use rsync to do incremental backups of your homedir to your server with a crontab. Easy and simple.

12·7 months agoEight years ago I could afford a one bedroom apartment by not having a car. That is not possible anymore. My $650 bachelor pad is now $1400 and wages have only slightly gone up. There’s now a generational divide between people in their late 20s and early 20s.
2·7 months agoI mean it is possible to run your own authoritative nameservers on a server you own with a static IP. It’s a pretty irresponsible thing to self host, but it is possible :)
12·7 months agoThe biggest reason they’ve been tightly coupled historically has been event notifications and invitations. It’s a lot easier for one email client to both create the event in the calendar, and send the event metadata (.ics file) to the invitees.
Nowadays, it’s honestly much simpler to have them entirely separate, at least for personal use. My partner and I use a shared NextCloud calendar which works well on both iOS and Android using CalDAV. Much simpler than Google/microsoft/icloud’s sharing options.
You can use pretty much any camera with ZoneMinder as long as it supports ONVIF or RTSP and has the right connectivity and power inputs for you. I did something similar with some cheap TP-link cameras with pretty good results. With motion activated recording, I have just shy of 12 month of recordings stored on a 500G SSD.

I use plain old bash with the plain old .bashrc that ships with Debian. I’ll bolt on a git-branch-aware function into the prompt here and there, but that’s about it.
Why? I ssh into a few dozen machines most days and my shitty little lizard brain can’t deal with everything being different on each box. So as much as I appreciate zsh, powerline plug-ins, all that glitzy stuff, I’ll be a late adopter when it comes to plain old Debian stable…
Or, hear me out, maybe we don’t expose network management interfaces to untrusted networks? Sure, shit can still get breached by very deep intrusions, but at least you don’t show up on shodan!?

In the mid 20th century the USSR had enough weapons manufacturing capability through Biopreparat to kill every human on the planet in less than 30 days. In the 1920s France had enough poison gasses to kill every inhabitant of Europe at the time. America and Russia each still have enough thermonuclear warheads to kill 95% of the earth’s population in under 30 minutes. None of these are new technologies, literally all of this technology is 50-75 years old and hasn’t developed much since because you can’t do any better than “total annihilation”.
The modern stuff uses signed bootloaders, ie secureboot. Afaik there’s no custom OS’s for C9k or Nexus gear.

I don’t need artificial intelligence in my terminal. Do you know how many times some troll has posted about “rm -fr /” on Reddit and other shitty forums, which then gets gobbled up and laundered by LLMs? Not letting that anywhere near my prod servers with valuable data.
