My recommendation falls squarely on the Omada series from TP-Link. It’s their SMB (small-medium business) offering and its very wallet friendly for what it is. Though WiFi 7 stuff is of course not cheap if you want the bleeding edge. I suggest going with the EAP6 series with WiFi 6E. No need to buy the physical controller, instead DIY a router with opnsense or pfsense and the Omada software for managing the APs is what I recommend. You of course need a switch with PoE like TL-SG2008P. PoE is a game changer for making wiring up the APs easy, and I do recommend wiring them because then you don’t need to think about having a strong signal between the APs.

Criteria being stability mainly, all consumer stuff is much more prone to the occasional drop and just plain wonky ness. Another criteria being upgrade path, the Omada stuff can easily be sold when you upgrade because they retain value pretty well (and you can find them used to start with as well). They also don’t ship with the bloat consumer devices come with. With features you don’t need and router+AP combo is fine if you’re in a single room apartment but it doesn’t scale to a multiroom setup well. I’ve used Asus “AI-mesh” and you really waste more money than you save in my experience.

For phones that infrastructure is just so much more costly since it needs near constant replacement with newer tech. 5G is far from completely rolled out and the next project looks to be dismantling GSM and 3G after that it won’t be long till 6G. Meanwhile Fiber is all but ubiquitous by now, hell several vacation homes in the extended family has fiber ny now and the cables won’t need to be switched for a long time I reckon, I’m betting 30 years at least of only needing to change the switches every 10 or so years, which is infinitely cheaper and easier than building/replacing a mobile network mast.

I live pretty darn rural nowadays. Used to live in a biggish city. Didn’t dislike it, it has its upsides like people have pointed out. And I could afford it, even a largeish house if I would’ve wanted. But the prospect of being effectively turned into a modern day slave by virtue of having to have a well paying job to afford mortgage and over all higher cost of living associated with big city life it just didn’t feel appealing. So we bought an old farm in the boonies instead for less than we sold the apartment for. Pretty much no neighbors. 20.000 SQ meters of land, some goats and hens. It’s pretty tranquil and peaceful. Still work a stressful IT job that pays well but being able to just stroll through a 100 year old forest by walking out the door does wonders for stress management I feel. Sure the commute sucks when I do need to be at the office but it’s a small price to pay and it has meant that I actually take the time to read quite a few books per year during said commute.

The only power consumers have is voting with your wallet. Which in this case if this is important for you you need to cancel else they’ll let it be and then later down the road they’ll push even further. Also this is what always happens when a company gets big and think/know they can get away with it.

Cool, but I’m guessing that ain’t especially cheap right? I pay $60 a year for 4 cores and 8 GB RAM (400 gb storage). Which I consider a pretty OK price. $5 a month.

You can setup a tunnel from your Hetzner VPS to your home with say Netbird and then run stuff that would be a bit to expensive to run on rented hardware. Like say Nextcloud, Matrix or game servers, on your RPi while still having them web accessible thanks to the tunnel.

Personally I’m very fed up with AWS, Cloudflare and Google virtually owning the modern Internet. I selfhost to get away from their spying and oligopoly so routing DNS through them is simply out of the question, for me.

And really it’s not that hard these days with pre-packaged Docker containers. I have a fairly complex setup and while I have put hours into it it wasn’t rocket surgery by any means. It’s also quite healthy to understand how DNS actually works if you work with the Web imo.

DNS is plenty secure due to its simplicity and age. From the perspective of securing your server that is. DNS has numerous flaws when it comes to security in terms of can you trust the resolved name. But that is another matter.

I’d be more worried about the gui, keep that behind a secure proxy or don’t expose it to the internet at all if we’re talking a server at home.

I run my own DNS and it’s virtually a prerequisite if you want to host stuff under a personal domain in a smooth fashion. At least if you don’t want to rely on a big player like say Cloudflare.

It’s a long game, I think I just overestimated how far in you’d be at 20 hours. Since I really jammed with the game (and it was before I had 3 kids 😂) I had done all the side quests I had found but I hadn’t explored further away than the zones the side quests took you to. I will say though that plot wise it would make absolutely no sense to save it to the “late game” if that’s even possible. But that is the fight I was talking about, 100%.

Well the “early” fight with the noble / king / count can’t remember in PoE had me tearing my hair on the difficulty I played on, took intense space bar action and every trick I could muster in terms of abusing targeting and kiting, etc to win it. I don’t know how many times I reloaded and how many days I tried, must’ve been in the hundreds by the end when I finally got it due to a few lucky crits and rolls.

I have this weird thing where I love a game to be challenging because it’s not engaging if it’s easy, it makes the game boring to me, but at the same time I despise grinding and generally rote gameplay with the only purpose of amassing more points to be able to challenge the next boss. But very few RPGs I like are like that. Baldurs Gate 1/2 are excellent games that I love but I get extremely frustrated by some encounters which just feels like absolute bullshit and require extreme grinding or going off to do a myriad of side quests to bump up your level. Same holds true for Pillars of Eternity which I also love.

Though I tend to be a stubborn person so I generally come back a week or month later if I get stuck but I tend to put the game down once I’ve dealt with the immediate challenge and realize that I need to do all that boring stuff again for the next boss and then I just don’t start.
