I haven’t tried it, but having tried Perplexity, I can say that it’s difficult to have something that’s worse than it!

or even pinging GPS satellites (because that leaves a log)
What logs does it leave and where? Satellite is a one way communication system, the devices just receive the satellites signal and calculate the position by themselves.
I’ve been sending my position to my server (with Traccar and GPSlogger) for years and I haven’t had any problems with the battery. It sends out the position every 5 seconds (excessive, I know!!! 🙈) and every 69 seconds when the battery is below 25% and only when it’s not connected to a WiFi network.
But I’m with you about the new Google tracking system. I haven’t had the chance to check: does it work like Apple and can track devices that have been turned off?
I’ll have a look at it. In the meanwhile, I’ve been using Tasker for that: if an SMS from curtains numbers is received with the text “POSITION”, it will reply back with an OpenStreetMap link of the smartphone position.
millions are still being poured into development efforts
Millions for development? Do you have any sources? I’d like to read about it. Thanks
I don’t know how that Synology DS423+ could consume 50W idle. It seems veeery strange to me. I mean, my E5-2620 V2 on a 10/15 years old Supermicro motherboard with 16GB of RAM, 4 idle SATA 3,5" hard drives and 2 SSD is consuming 55W! Something doesn’t sound right to me.
Because you can’t just copy the files of a running DB (if I got what you mean).
I would never deploy Compose in any kind of production environment.
May I ask you why?
I self host a lot of services, but I will never self host my email server If any of my self hosted service would have to go down, I will work on it as soon as I can, but it coudl that it’s not that soon. If I would have self hosted my own email server at it would go down, I would have to work on it straight away because usually after 24/48 hours the other email server give up and send back the email (that was directed to me) to the sender, I could not receive airplane ticket for example and a lot of other stuff. What if that would happen when I’m on holiday in the other side of the world??? 🙈
Of course! But I must advice that you will be limited to 1/0,5Gbps! 😁
This would also lead to safer cars because they are better roadworthy
Well, I’m not sure about this literally about car and figuratively about selfhosted: not all the selfhoster have the skills to selfhost, they just think they have and so for the car. If you screw up a service/the whole server you may lose all your data or be at the mercy of some data kidnapper, if you screw up your car brakes, well…bye bye.
In both cases, we don’t have enough skilled people to have that 25% selfhoster (but not even one tenth) nor 25% car self repair drivers. And this is not as bad as it sounds: we can’t be skilled about everything that we need, it’s just impossible! And that’s why we have society!
Use a VPN like Wireguard. I’d suggest putting the laptop into a DMZ, if you have a good router. If you don’t…buy a 30/40€ Fujitsu Futuro S720/920 and use It as an OPNsense router (video tutorial)
For what I use it, I’ll stick with it. I should be using it more, but I’m too lazy! 🙈😆
I use Wallabag, nothing social special, but it works. It has an extension for Firefox
I already have the server, it doesn’t make any sense to change it. Above all, as someone else has pointed, the 4 lanes are enough for transcoding.
Thanks for your feedback, but I tend to stay away from app that hasn’t been updated in a while (that one and all the other GitHub alternatives on F-Droid are years old☹).
You’ve clarified your thought to a normal standard, as you didn’t previously. Learn to say “I was wrong” when you are wrong!
Edit: could I have said in the first place that I thought that you were wrong? Probably yes and I’ll keep that in mind.
Dude, just chill! I didn’t think that your answer made sense in the first place and that’s why I’ve asked why you wrote that sentence. I’m not the one that reply to a comment saying “You’re wrong!”, unless I’m more than sure about what I’m talking, otherwise, and in this case I wasn’t sure and I wanted to know your point. I’m here to give my point of view and also to LEARN from others and this is why I kept asking you what was the need of resolving a DNS in a firewall rule, so that maybe I could start using those rules too. On the other side, if you understood that your answer didn’t make sense, you simply could have just said it and not waste mine and your time. I think that we ALL are here to share idea and knowledge and that NO ONE is perfect, me in the first place!
Try PassAndroid. It hasn’t been updated in more than a year, but…it works
