Zigbee definitely fun with HomeAssistant. I have an SLZB-06M adapter which has PoE (important for me) and is a fairly “open” product (don’t need to jump through hoops to flash firmware). I read somewhere that it may offer Thread support at some point but wouldn’t count on that.
When I was in college, working for Google was a dream job for a lot of my friends. I have to think that hiring from that position is awesome — lots of really smart, motivated, enthusiastic grads, and you get to pick the best. I wonder if all that has changed?

It’s pathetic that I’ll happily recommend my Emporia Vue2 energy monitor to folks running HA — not because it works out of the box, but because the company is aware of the community integration projects and seems ok with it, even if they don’t actually support it. (ESPHome Firmware flash gives you local control — It’s been pretty great!)

As others have said, I’d play with routing/IP forwarding such that being VPN’d to one machine gives you access to everything — basically I would set it up as a “road warrior” VPN (but possibly split tunnel on the client [yes I know, WireGuard doesn’t have servers or clients but you know what I mean]).
Alternately, I think you could do some reverse proxy magic such that everything goes through the WireGuard box — a.lan goes to service A, b.lan to service B, etc., but if you have non-http services this may be a little more cumbersome.
I’m really liking my orange pi 5 Plus. Wasn’t able to get the 32GB version, but 16GB is realistically more than I need anyway.
Main bonus for me over RPi is the RAM and storage — SD, eMMC, and NVME. The dual NICs and extra efficiency cores are a nice perk, too.
Cannot recommend Immich enough as a self-hosted Photos alternative. Obviously not a drop in replacement, and if you don’t want to self-host it’s not really feasible. But it is just awesome.
On the other hand, a completely open ecosystem works well too — ARM for Linux feels exactly like ARM on x86/64 in my experience. Granted this is for headless stuff on an (RPi and Orange Pi, both ARM, both running Debian), but really the only difference is the bootloader situation.
We love package managers though!
Most Linux users like the benefits of having a single command/interface to search for, install, and update software. The problem is when the source(s) for those programs is locked down.
Important to note though that air resistance is nonlinear — it uses less energy to get from A to B slowly than quickly.

If power usage not a concern then used x86/x64 gear is probably the way to go. Surplus gear (corporate, university…) possibly an option for you. That’s a very tight budget though, so I don’t think it really gives you the luxury of choosing specs unfortunately. That said: I might go fot the best bones/least RAM/storage if you think you might upgrade it down the road. 4GB RAM with an upgrade path to 32 is preferable to 8GB non-upgradable IMHO. Likewise, 500GB spinny disk with extra bays and an NVME slot is nicer than 500GB SSD with no upgrade path. Again… really tight budget so this may all be out of the question.
I’m a fan of low power gear, so I’d recommend something like a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB, or another SBC (I just grabbed an Orange Pi 5 Plus and I like it so far — NVME, 16GB RAM, dual NIC). However these will be out of your budget, especially once you add case, power supply, and storage.

Credit cards, for instance, are not required but extremely useful. For instance, my recollection is that when booking hotels or rental cars with a debit card they will put a hold on your account for collateral. This could be a problem if you’re living paycheck to paycheck. If you have a credit card, you may get a hold as well — but this is just reducing the amount of available credit. Functionally this is the same, if you have enough money, but if you’re living on the edge and your rent money is in your checking account, this is pretty unfortunate in the case if a debit card.
Additionally, credit cards offer consumer protections, including chargebacks. My understanding is that debit charges are much more difficult to dispute.
And, in the US, for many people not in urban centers, owning a car is essential for life/work. Quick Google search claims, in relation to savings, “The median balance for American households is $5,300.” So if your car bites the dust, buying a new (used) car may not be possible without a loan.
You’re right though, it’s certainly not literally required.
Given the effect it has on credit score, it will perhaps be more difficult to accumulate debt — it will be harder to take out large credit card, mortgage, or other loans. Probably not applicable to medical and whatnot.
In theory I think it makes sense: loans should be a privilege not a right, or something like that. But in reality, loans are essentially required for modern life, at least in the US. So the people who can least afford it end up with loans with ridiculous interest rates (even if the total loan amount is smaller than it would be pre-bankruptcy).
I am fortunate enough to be able to pay off my credit card every month, so the interest rate doesn’t really matter. It’s a great, but dystopian, example of positive feedback: those who can afford pay less (no interest), and those who can’t afford pay more (interest).
Never used TailScale but I know it’s WireGuard based. Does it do keepalive by default? I was having issues with VPS (WireGuard peer with static IP) not being able to ping my network (router as WireGuard peer with dynamic IP and no port forwards). Sounds like this isn’t what’s going on here but just in case…
Thanks! So, for local (not VPN) traffic I like to access the local IP for bandwidth reasons — would you then just set up SSL on both the local server and the VPS?
On my Mac running yabai it sometimes gets into this weird state where the mouse does this as it toggles rapidly back and forth between some windows. No idea what causes it…
On Linux I run i3 which kinda negates the need for the mouse finder since it will move the cursor to the active window.

In grad school I picked up a free used HP LaserJet. It had Ethernet, and could use generic/off brand cartridges. Yeah it was big and noisy but it was an awesome workhorse and it Just Worked (with out-of-the-box CUPS/Linux support too, IIRC).
