A federal judge in Florida indicated Wednesday that she may delay the start of the classified documents trial of Donald Trump, pointing to the other criminal cases the former president is facing as well as the mounds of evidence his attorneys need to review.

Trump’s trial on charges that he hid classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructed government efforts to get them back is currently scheduled for May 20, 2024.

But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon appeared ready to side with Trump’s attorneys in their request to postpone the trial, saying she “has a hard time seeing how realistically this (current schedule) would work” even as prosecutors pushed her to keep the scheduled start date.

The classified documents case filed by special counsel Jack Smith’s team is one of four Trump is facing that could go to trial next year. Another federal case, also brought by Smith and charging him with scheming to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, is scheduled for trial in March in Washington.

“Let’s delay the case” says the unqualified Trump appointed judge who should have recused herself.

The system should not rely on judges with a conflict of interest to recuse themselves. A judge that was appointed by the defendant just shouldnt be allowed to preside over that case. Period.

It’s amazing how much of our government relies on the assumption that government officials will do the right thing. Turns out, it just took one con-man to blatantly just not give a fuck and the whole checks and balances thing fell completely apart.

Aye, Andrew Jackson really got one over on the supreme court with those natives. America’s been an illegitimate farce for nearly two centuries now.

That’s why I don’t care if the trial gets delayed. It won’t be fair or meaningful anyway.

In fact, I hope she delays it long enough that it isn’t done until after the election. I’d rather Trump didn’t have a legal win to brag about.

Good point. Although it will almost certainly be appealed either way and all these cases will end in the Supreme Court. Increasingly it’s looking like our current system of government will be on the line in the next election and we will either spin into dictatorship or hopefully end Trump’s political career. A more confident voter would want Trump as the Republican candidate as it is likely he will hurt all Republican candidates. I’m not a more confident voter.

Cannon also pointed to the 1.3 million pages of evidence that prosecutors in the Mar-a-Lago case have provided to the defense along with thousands of hours of security video shot at Trump’s resort. She questioned whether Trump’s lawyers will have adequate time to review the evidence in the next six months.

Could you imagine if a drug lord was caught with 1.3 million pounds of cocaine and the judge was like “I dunno, that’s so much cocaine that we’re going to need to delay the trial to count it all.”

“We’re gonna need more time… to count this 1.2 million pounds…no no… pretty sure it was always 1.2…. I AM NOT HIGH?! Why would you even ask that?”

This is absolutely untrue. Trump doesn’t deserve his trial delayed, but it is absolutely the case that sometimes people who are actually innocent need more time for their defense to be prepared, and this idea shouldn’t be perpetuated in general as it can bias potential jurors.

Yeeeeah, I’m gonna assume weird blanket statements like that come from frustration at the snail pace of any real repercussions for Trump instead of actual nuanced legal critism.

Which is a huge issue on social media imo. People are quick to make blanket statements, and then it becomes a thing that people repeat over and over.

Just take a minute and think about the consequences of such things before posting, because you never know how far people will take it.

Yeah… makes way more sense to get it over with and then he could say “see, i told you” but that’s only what an innocent person would do.

The judge has been overturned in the past by the higher court in her district specifically for a combination of trying to help Trump and incompetence during that effort. She got randomly assigned to one of the most important and large scale cases of national security violations and she’s doing everything she can to prevent Trump from going to trial. She’s been refusing to enter orders because those could be appealed to an actually impartial and competent court. She’s been delaying decisions and then going against established procedures. She’s never handled a significant case before and it shows in her ineptitude and partisanship.

The problem isn’t that he’s going to be convicted, it’s when. Even if she manages to delay the case for years, it’ll eventually be forced through and when it’s appealed to a judge who isn’t in the tank for the defendant, he’ll be convicted. The problem is the justice delayed is justice denied for the nation.

And if he dies of a fucking heart attack before convictions then people will think know they can do the same thing free of consequences.
