Sony didn’t care about consent when they put rootkits on millions of CDs.
So they’re protective of their OWN media libraries, but when its customers libraries “fuck em”
Sony and 4 other companies basically own all music. If they can opt out, it gives them a defacto monopoly on any music generators. The AI music is still going to come and artists aren’t getting a dime either way except maybe some big names that don’t need the money anyways.
There is nothing to be gained from taking Sony’s side here. Sony is a pos company that exploits all the artists under it. It will exploit it’s data to create more profit through AI, without paying them.
Its either open source AI anyone can run at home or closed source AI that only a few companies can legally run, offered with a hefty subscription fee and censorship.

The difference being that Sony actually has teams of lawyers who specialize in copyright violations, including unauthorized sampling. If the AI companies are caught using Sony material this won’t go nearly as easily for them as stealing some random blogger’s writings or a small artist’s images.
They’re crazy if they think their catalogue hasn’t already been used to train models
And AI companies are crazy if they think Sony won’t makee them pay for that as soon as they can prove it.
That might take a while.
