Most cartoon characters don’t, Mickey mouse and all the other old Disney cartoons also have 4. I believe they did it so the hands looks bigger but don’t quote me on that.
My mom, who used to do art professionally, always said “four finger hands are a hell of a lot easier to draw than five finger ones, and I sure wouldn’t want to have to draw stuff that hard to draw, 24 frames per second…”

Yup, this is what I’ve heard too (my brother is an animator and I’ve been obsessed with comics and cartoons most of my life)

It’s so they are faster to animate. Drop that one digit makes drawing them faster and saves money.
