What makes JavaScript so widely disliked? I know very little of it, and in skimming different stuff I think I’ve seen like a million different frameworks for it, so is that a part of it?

What would one recommend as more of a custom build version of these with a way to connect a convenient remote (smartphone or otherwise)? Alternatively is there a way to sort of jailbreak many of them, or does that just become more cumbersome?

Any chance you have any experience with FreshRSS’s web scraping ability for sites without RSS feeds? I’ve been dabbling with RSSBridge lately, but it seems like having this altogether might be a decent idea if I’m going to be mucking around with server-software stuff.

As a bonus it will check to see if there are some glaring incompatibilities at the same time.

I’d heard of the site but for some reason I’d forgotten this part. I’ll definitely use it for that at a minimum (and maybe for sourcing parts as well depending!), as I have a habit of missing some tiny detail that happens to relate to compatibility.

Similar to the other person that replied to ya, I’m in an older vehicle so I don’t have anything like that in mine, instead relying on either aux cable or bluetooth receiver to connect the phone to the audio system. It got to the point that I got a bluetooth media remote to get around the unreliability of voice commands.

Older vehicle, so it’s basically just the phone and either an aux cable or bluetooth receiver, so that probably explains some of it 😅

I used to try to use voice control for changing media when driving, but found it hilariously unreliable since it had to try to parse the voice command through the music. Is there a trick to that besides having a better mic I’m missing?

I’ve not tried Florisboard yet, but OpenBoard doesn’t have it (neither in the main build nor forks from what I can tell) and nor is it available in AnySoftKeyboard’s default install, but it’s highly customizable so it may be an option there.

That said, isn’t spellcheck underlining more frequently in the apps you’re typing into rather than the virtual keyboard? Tbh I hadn’t ever noticed it in Gboard before, but I haven’t used it in a little while (though in looking into its settings I see it now, I guess I thought it’d been the other apps instead the whole time).

Tbh that’s probably correct, and the differences may be from me avoiding autocorrect as much as possible because of obnoxious stuff like it persistently trying to correct fav words like fuck

Fwiw that’s what I primarily do, but it’s felt a little slower and still error-prone, whereas I’d think/hope direct tap-typing might mitigate both.

From what I’ve seen of some folks, it at least seems like it, but maybe I’m mistaken and it’s more experience with tap-typing.

I was searching to find an answer and came across this discussion, so for others asking: how to block an instance? (or alternatively: how to block instances? additional search terms to help find this: blocking instance on Lemmy? Lemmy instance blocking?)

If you’re on the web version of your Lemmy site/instance, click your username>settings>blocks, and this next part may depend on your display resolution or amount of blocked users/communities, but in any event: scroll down/look to the bottom left and if your instance is on the latest version of Lemmy there should be a new box labeled Block instance.

Click the menu/button to the right of the Block instance text and a search dropdown will appear. Type in or copy/paste the name of the instance you want to block, and if your site/instance has connected to it, it should show up in the search results. Click the result and wait a moment till the message “[instance name] blocked” appears. Depending on what your site/instance’s running on, general traffic, or other technical things, the time for that message appearing may vary.

Regardless, if you don’t see an immediate response, don’t be thrown off, it’s just taking some time.

To clarify a little, I was asking more about things where…Importance isn’t so much a factor. It’s more to do with wanting to know whatever new oddity might be around to check out. Passivity in this situation is allowing others to have more input on what reaches you, which isn’t always reliable if you want to explore different stuff.

I need to figure out a better way to frame this question. 🤔

If it’s some critical information, that is only published in one place, and you need to cite it for a paper, then it’s either gone or modified beyond recognition.

So the critical information may be best preserved if in some way associated with unscrupulous, dubious information? Or in other words, the tried and true folktale/embellishment transmission method?

I should check again to see if any of these are even around me, as part of why I asked is that I’m not aware of any indie/small theatres nearby.
