Well judging from what you see on Lemmy a lot of people would be willing to pay. What’s missing on Peertube is the ability for a creator to lock his videos behind a paywall in a « you wanna watch? Pay me » way.

Nick from the Linux Experiment was explaining that he was making something like 0.02 Euros per view on Youtube and that people supporting him directly were bringing so much more without being at the mercy of an algorithm.

Supporting him for 1 Euro a month is fine with the amount of what I’m watching from him on Peertube, paying 5 dollars a month to watch everything Linus Tech Tips produces on Floatplane is a bit too much for me…

Yeah YouTube is not possible to avoid.

I really hope that one day we’ll have another platform where you can just pay 2$ per month to every channel you subscribe to and all the great YouTubers open an alternative channel on that platform.

For now PeerTube and Odysee look like the best alternatives…

After looking a bit into Patreon, Peertube, Floatplane, Nebula, Rumble, Odysee and Dailymotion, I find it crazy that even when you’re willing to pay, all the good content is the one that you can watch for free on YouTube (with a few exceptions of course).

Yeah but using a YouTube client would feel a bit dishonest to me as you’re still using Youtube in the end😇

I’ll look more into Patreon as I didn’t know you could have videos directly on it.

I’m just using it to listen to the Linuux Experiment podcast.

It was working okay until 2-3 weeks ago, but there were always a few disconnection issues or the mouse would take time to be detected on startup.

The Surface Kernel was an improvement over the stock kernel, but it never really solved everything.

If I go back to wired, I’ll just reverse to the stock kernel.

Well I clearly know that wired is way more reliable and efficient for a lot of things. I’d never charge my phone without a wire for instance.

Still I’m happy to have wifi at home or wireless controllers for my Playstation 5.

Depending on how your home is set up, it can be awful to have cables everywhere.

I guess I’ll go with a second hand wired mouse but I don’t like that I’m giving up on bluetooth on Linux. It feels like something which should be a given.

The same Microsoft Mobile Mouse works perfectly with my MacBook Pro 2012 with Fedora on it…

I use Infomaniak Mail for my emails and kDrive from infomaniak too as an alternative to Google Drive.

It’s a swiss company from Geneva (where I live) and it’s also used by the state of Geneva for hosting and other things.

I really highly rate their products and prices. The email is free.

Well to be honest I don’t remember exactly how it didn’t work on my other computer since it was months ago.

I just want to future proof the ability to clone my Surface Go install on any future computer just in case.

I really enjoy Gran Turismo 7 even if it lacks a proper career mode and the AI isn’t good.

Looking forward to Asseto Corsa 2 as people were really happy with the first one and I haven’t played it.

I feel like the problem right now is that we have too many open worlds as if every game needed to be one.

As much as the ps3-xbox 360 era was the FPS Era, the PS5-Xbox X is the open world era.

I hope that soon we will go back to more variety.

Right now I’ve adopted a rythm where I force myself to play a linear game between every open world.

Sometimes making an iThing (iPhone) work with another iThing (Fiancée ´s Apple TV) isn’t as easy as it should. Streaming the nba app from my phone to the Apple TV was a nightmare a few years ago. Now I just use my PlayStation as the nba is hostile to Linux even in a browser.

So, taking into account the fact that Linux is free and works on almost any hardware, I can only congratulate the people making Linux possible.

I’m not really into PC gaming, but the more gaming possibilities you have on Linux, the better it’ll be👍

Loved the world, hated the story, so for me it’s clearly not a masterpiece.

I’m also going to buy some Linux stickers soon, but I want the money to be used to support Linux, so just some printshop is out of question.

I love seeing these screenshots of old Linux distributions as it makes me realize how much things have improved.

I’m just a consumer but I really appreciate the work everyone has done and I ain’t going back to Windows anymore.

10 years is clearly not enough. I’d say 20 years but I clearly don’t know how much work is involved.

I also clearly think that preserving the history of technology isn’t given enough importance with games disappearing, OS’s being not useable anymore and stuff like this.

But Linux is clearly the good student here.

I have a Surface Go 1 with 8gb running Fedora Workstation. It has a typecover and it spends most of its time linked to a monitor through the USB-C port. It charges this way and can also send data to the monitor which is used as an USB hub.

As I’m never using it only as a tablet, I can’t give you more informations about the touchscreen functionalities.

It’s a really interesting article about something we might not think about.

It’d be interesting also to try to see how much money they can save by using a lower bitrate or saving energy by using less servers.

It’s a lot of things we take for granted when we’re just watching a show and you don’t think about all the work behind it.

Okay then I guess I’ll just backup my home folder on kDrive (my cloud service) and then just remember which programs are installed since the automatic listing of programs seems a bit too complicated for me. Thanks for the help!
