It’s something you have to worry about in basically all apartments (in the US–despite thin walls and no insulation, I never had loud and inconsiderate neighbors when I lived in Japan). You might get lucky and get a place with good soundproofing, but the odds are slim.
TIL some people eat them.
My family and I live on opposite sides of the country. My dad likes to come visit pretty regularly, and I used to be concerned at how little he drank. He drank beer, but barely took a few sips of water here and there.
It wasn’t until, like, his fourth visit that I realized that he drinks soda. I now stock juice when he visits. Still sugary, but I’m not stocking soda for him. Anything left when he went home would just have to be poured down the drain.
I had forgotten that many Americans just don’t drink water. And yes, he is pre-diabetic (but not overweight, remarkably enough).
The addiction is probably just caffeine. Try coffee or tea.
Coffee is not unhealthy when consumed in reasonable (normal) quantities and assuming you don’t pour a quarter of a cup of sugar in there. Which most people don’t, unless they’re getting a “coffee beverage” like a frappe or whatever.
I had Five Guys for the first time ever last year and I was surprised by how good their burger was. The prices were a little shocking, but the food was not bad.
I used to have a cat who absolutely loved their French fries. He’d come and beg for them and try to steal them like a dog. When he managed to get one, he’d hold it in his little fist (he had pterodactyly) and eat it like a toddler.
Not too surprising since it’s related to rabies.

I don’t get fast food often, but I did go to McDonald’s a week or two ago. I learned that they replaced their fountains so that they no longer dispense water, so you can’t get a free cup of water anymore. You have to buy a bottle of water or a soda.
I don’t intend on ever returning to a McDonald’s.

Growing up in New Jersey, where we had Wawa everywhere, 7-Eleven was the “dirt convenience store” like how some towns back then had the good mall and the dirt mall. I was shocked when I moved to another state and found out that 7-Eleven was considered the good convenience store.
I spent a bit of time living in Japan, and to this day, years later, I still frequently dream of visiting Japan and one of my top priorities being going to kombini (convenience stores). They’re amazing. I hope 7-Eleven is able to transform the convenience store experience in the US into a kombini experience.
