You don’t have to self host it. It works like TeamViewer. You install it on both the client and host and with the ID and Password you can then access your remote client. But if you want more control/privacy you can host your own relay server.

The same problem is in politics in Germany. They vote only for the big politicians who have already a big group of supporters and so a high chance to win.
