I must be in the minority that prefers digital and went digital for good since the 7th generation, SCII HD bought on the X360 still plays on XSX. I only buy physical when it is an import not available in the store in my country such as DOAX3, thank you Play Asia. I have a diskless XBox and Playstation, so I play the imported games on the Switch. If I didn’t have a Switch and if the Playstation versions weren’t more censored I might see a reason to get a disk drive for it.
Sony would have more digital sales if they didn’t fuck with people’s libraries. The only way to be sure that you can still play some PS games is to have a physical copy.
You have to be a dumb to trust digital “library”
Even steam tbh all that shit is has its day numbered
Maybe gog but still got to habe your own media back up
Naive would be a better adjective than dumb, imo.
It is dumb to trust physical media with copy protection. Those discs don’t last nearly as long as you think they will and you have no way to make a proper backup. You are trying to solve a legal/societal problem with a technical workaround, that never really works out.
I got a few decades left. Leave me alone 🐸
I’ve had properly stored, professionally pressed, official DVD and CDROM’s suffer bit rot, become in playable and in one case explode into shards in my DVD-ROM drive. And it didn’t take decades, most were <7 years old. Don’t be so sure you have decades.
There can be a pretty significant price discrepancy between digital and physical copies.
Yeah, the digital price only goes down for sales, otherwise even years after release you’re paying full price. With discs you can buy from whatever store you want and usually prices go down a lot within a year (which you should wait anyway because games are too buggy at release).
The PS5 is a great UHD Blu-Ray player. I see no reason why not get the disc version.
Shame it doesn’t support dolby vision though.
Need to leave some features out intentionally, to add later to the PS6 as a selling point and incentivise customers to upgrade!
Its not entirely on sony though, DV comes with a hefty licensing fee, and would drive the console up by whatever that amount is.
More like Sony doesn’t want to cannibalize selling their own dedicated Blu-ray players for a much higher profit margin.
A $100 bluray drive, an Ugoos am6, and coreelec can get play everything for way less than a high end bluray player that can cost $1000.
why does it matter when the disc for a game is now basically just a download code? the studios have already won this battle.
It matters because you can get used games for sometimes a tenth of the price they charge on the digital store.
Gee…
And how many digital editions were sold to people who wished they could have gotten one with a disc drive?
The numbers are in, Sony. Don’t sit there and say ‘Nobody wants to buy discs anymore.’ Almost everyone. Almost everyone wants to buy discs anymore.
Any time a company says “People don’t want x” what they mean is “We don’t want people to want x”, usually due to money, effort, control, or a mixture of the three.
How come console gamers are the only ones still making a push for discs?
We have one shop, we dont own the games, unwarranted bans are a thing - locking you out of your games, sales are shit tier and they keep adding advertising and necessitating online.
You can resell your games
You used to be able to resell your PC games too, back in the day.
Why can’t PC games also come on discs? The last one I had the option to buy on disc I remember was Skyrim. When I put the disc in, it launched steam, connected my purchase to my account, and steam did the remainder of the install over the network. Turns out, it didn’t really have anything useful on disc.
yeah and it’s not that dissimilar on consoles. 800gb call of duty games on a single disc? plus you need a connection to play most games or even get the necessary patches that make the game playable since everything comes out as trash in the 1.0 version.
I see the appeal and desire for physical media but at this point it’s a charade and more harmful for the environment to boot
You can also buy second hand games and even borrow some free at the library
Because it all routes through one digital storefront without the possibility of competition, so digital pricing on console storefronts is artificially high.
Plus, they’ve already shut down stores on older consoles and people have lost games. That’s less likely as console companies learn how to make competent digital storefronts and account systems, many have felt the burn of losing all your digital purchases on console and won’t let it happen twice.
I ended up with a disc console, but I admit it makes up a minority of my usage. I just wanted to be able to play old PS4 games, and blu-ray movies. Most of the games I play are on PS+ or purchased digitally.
