Edge isn’t a bad browser. However it’s based on Chromium so using it just feeds into the Chromium monopoly.
Firefox or Safari is the only way.
Safari hell no. Apple shows no sign of disappearing so Safari is safe.
Edge is also tracking you, a lot.
I tried switching to Firefox some weeks ago but deinstalled it immediately after realising that it’s DNS doesn’t work. My ISP is censoring some 🏴☠️ websites and I can only visit them by not using my ISP’s dns service.
No matter which DNS i selected in the browser settings I always got an error saying that Firefox couldn’t reach the DNS. I will stick to Opera GX now 🤷♂️
Edit: it’s funny how the butthurt Firefox users downvote me for just talking about my experience with the browser.
you could try setting the DNS over HTTP settings to off. That might solve the issues. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dns-over-https
Didn’t work, got the censoring screen of my ISP after doing this.
How are you changing your dns? In your router or in your system?
In my browser. If I setup Google public dns or cloudfare in Opera GX as DNS it works perfectly fine. The only downside is that I can’t access fritz.box anymore, I have to use the IP of my router to be able to access it, I just bookmarked it though.
In Firefox the dns settings dont work at all. If I disable dns I get the censoring screen, if I enable any of the dns settings Firefox always says it can’t reach the DNS service.
I have never set my DNS in my browser. Always in the system or in the router. So I don’t think I can help you.
Thanks for your effort. I will just keep using opera gx, not the best browser in terms of privacy but at least it works out of the box
Sounds like a typical layer 8 issue to me 🤔
typical layer 8 issue
🤣 I haven’t heard that one in a while!
The same DNS settings work in Opera GX, which means the problem is made by Mozilla
Okay listen… i fully support you in your choice to use the browser that works for you without spending time troubleshooting. But why Opera GX?
Because Google Chrome was slowly filling up my hard drive with temp files. I regualry had to delete mutlipe GB of temp files. With Opera GX I have only 200 MB
firefox uses doh, not regular dns
it still doesn’t work though 🤷♂️
It might be a good idea to get a good VPN for any of those sites (even the streaming ones). No hate if you ran into an issue with FF. Every now and then I do see some PCs act weird with FF DNS options. Never able to figure out what causes them to not work correctly while most other PCs are working fine on the same local network. Opera and Opera GX “feel” too “busy” for me personally with just all the random things on the UI and features. I support people using anything that isn’t official Chrome at this point.
If you don’t already have a VPN, here is a list article with more than a few options and give some basic info on stuff like if they keep logs of IPs and for how long. Some of them also have additional DNS options for removing ads. https://torrentfreak.com/best-vpn-anonymous-no-logging/
it’s funny how the butthurt Firefox users downvote me for just talking about my experience with the browser.
Nobody is downvoting you for just talking. They’re downvoting you because you very clearly lack knowledge in what you’re doing but are blaming it on the browser.
no the browser is the one to blame because the same settings which work in Opera don’t work in Firefox. I know I could change my dns system wide but it’s a personal preference to only make small changes to a running system.
There are 3 options for dns over https in Firefox and none of them work. disabling it obviously doesn’t work too because Firefox uses my ISP’s dns service then.
There are 3 options for dns over https in Firefox and none of them work.
Then you did something wrong.
Those bricks are laid incredibly poorly, look at all those gaps
Typical Windows app 🧌
AND at least 2 of them are already cracked!
In german we don’t say shitty brick wall, we say ‘Landhauscharme’ and I think it’s beautiful.
Ich hab das jetzt als Land Hausch Arme gelesen und war verwirrt
Dachte ich schon beim Schreiben. Hier wäre ein kleiner Bindestrich vielleicht nützlich gewesen.
British bricklayer.
I use arch btw…
Holy hell, what is that instance
Glorious master linux distribution. You should try it. Or install Gentoo.
Hi, do you have a moment to talk about Arch Linux? I got a pamphlet and reading material for you.
Yes, a 3000 page pamphlet
LFS
Hell no it ain’t
It’s Chrome, but Microsoft. So no it’s not good but not because of speed or technical quality.
Username checks out.
Ok, boomer.
.world really is the Reddit of lemmy smdh my damn head.
I don’t have a problem with Edge itself. We use it at work and it’s fine. I have a problem with microsoft constantly trying to trick me into using it among all their other shitty practices.
My dad came to me in a panic “All of my passwords are gone!!!” turns out macroshaft kicked chrome off default he was using edge without knowing. It actually took me awhile to realize it was edge too because the UI is so similar. Edge does have a really big unmovable spam toolbar along the side so that was pretty much my only major tell.
The toolbar can be turned off with 1 click
When it comes to browsing the web and showing content and having good add-ons, edge does a good job.
But why does it need to constantly advertise itself and other microsoft things to me? It’s annoying when Firefox does this, but it feels like edge does it almost every time I open it.
Plus I believe you can turn it off in firefox
just block me now then I don’t have any other personality traits
Okay, but windows has become alarmingly invasive and dumbed down.
I don’t hate windows as much as I hate Microsoft.
ReactOS is a cool project and I hope it goes somewhere.
ReactOS is dead and will go nowhere.
The reason I say this is that I’ve been following them for something like 15+ years by this point, and they haven’t made any perceptible progress in that time. They’re at exactly the same point now where they were 15 years ago.
Maybe they’ll launch with Starfield
I completely forgot about this little gem. I used to follow it too, but just dropped it along the way.
Yes, Windows has become alarmingly invasive and dumbed down.
But how difficult is it to use actual arguments to prove they did instead of pulling completely false ones out of your ass?
I make fun of Windows search all the time because it deserves it.
But I’m not going to make fun of Windows update because it doesn’t directly tell you what they changed. Since a single google search can give you the answer.
Anyway, Linux memes should be about Linux, not Windows. It is almost like those Linuxians are jealous Windows has a ginormous market share while their respective distro does not.
What market share are you talking about?
Overall Linux runs the world. So I am generally confused.
Oh, you know.
The 70% in the personal desktops wordwide.
The 75% in the personal laptop worldwide
The 30% of all operation systems, which only gets beaten by Android.
The 96.61% of devices that run Steam
The only one Linux has anything in is on servers.
Then go and use any of the things you are using without linux.
Lemmy? Hosted on a Linux server
Almost any major website? Linux server
Any other web service? Linux Server
The Server infrastructure that surrounds your favourite Operating System? Guess what, Linux server
Don’t forget to add android into the mix as well!
So you agree that it’s jealousy that the entire world uses windows and not linux? It’s the 23rd Year of the linux desktop in a row. “Uhhhhhh but my servers…” Nobody cares. Nobody wants to get rid of Debian and RHEL. Nobody wants to use them as a Desktop.
Nobody wants to use them as a Desktop.
Except for millions upon millions of users, right? Screw those guys because they aren’t the majority.
I dunno dude. 4 Billion People use computers and millions of users spread over several distributions is not a lot.
And with the amount of gatekeeping and arguing over what is and isnt the best i would also stay far away if i didnt administer servers. Even then i use windows most of the time.
Did I stutter?
Without Linux the whole world would litetally not run. I don’t fucking care what some consumers jack of on which OS. I care what runs literally our complete infrastructure.
Which car does use Windows or Mac? Which super Computer does that? Which Important Server does that? None, literally.
Mentioning Windows’ market share really hit a nerve with you, didn’t it?
I use Linux without worrying about whatever market shares anyone has, and I feel much happier that way.
Yes, I wanted to go against his “we as Linux users are jealous about Windows because of marketshare” which I tried to defeat because I literally am not jealous for given reasons.
The 30% of all operation systems, which only gets beaten by Android.
funny you mention that, wanna know what you get if you look at the Kernel running underneath Android? Oh would you look at that, it’s actually Linux…
I do agree on the weird obsession with hating windows but lack of market share is not the reason it happens, it’s probably more due to people leaving Windows in the first place because they were immensely unsatisfied with it (Unlike Windows or Mac there are very few Linux Pre-Built PCs out there so chances are any given Linux Desktop User actively decided on that choice) and are now just hung up and bashing on it.
To be honest I’d still be on Windows if MS hadn’t screwed me out of the license I bought through the MS store and attached to my MS account. I do kinda miss the new Bing assistant in Edge, that was neat to screw around with for free while I was on that OS
There are .deb and .rpm versions of Edge for Linux. Doesn’t get mentioned on the main download site until you scroll below the Mac/iPhone/Android options.
I do kinda miss the new Bing assistant in Edge, that was neat to screw around with for free while I was on that OS
You can use it on other browsers with a little bit of work, changing user agents and things like that.
Okay but hear me out, Linux.
This is hilarious.
My husband runs our Lemmy instance, and he’s subscribed to the Linux community, which is one of the most active on Lemmy (I probably don’t need to tell you that.) I’m basically just here for memes and I ultimately blocked the Linux community because it was all over my feed. I’m a normie and I just don’t care about Linux whatsoever, not enough for every other post to be about it anyway.
I enjoy Linux memes.
But not when the only joke they can muster being “Other OS bad for [insert dumb false argument here]”
insert thing that hasn’t happened since Windows 7 here
See the problem is, and I’ve experienced this myself, you leave Windows when it has a set of issues that have been long running. Then years later you get into an argument or make a meme and Windows now actually fixed that issue without you noticing because, well you’re not using it anymore.
Still would like some memes other than “hurr durr, Windows bad”, there’s plenty of memeable content within the Linux ecosystem (like every second app for a small niche ignoring XDG_HOME and just shitting the config files all over your home directory)
I think the issue is that most Linux users aren’t technically proficient enough to understand and make actual Linux memes about things like XDG_HOME, so the best they can think of is “Windows bad”.
The templeOS jokes kill another piece of me everytime I read them
Yeah it’s like a person who likes squid pizza and attempts to insert their love for the pizza every sentence they utter.
Some of us just like a simple pineapple pizza. And we’re too deep into it you cannot change us without changing the very atoms that comprise our earthly bodies.
I mean I know people who are still trying to find bypasses to get around Microsoft and their online only strategy.
If you’re still doing this, you.need to try Linux.
Agreed. I’ve been slowly moving the machines onto nixOS, and I’m reformatting an older Mac for a neighbor on nixOS as well. On the livecd it runs impressively fast, but on OSX it’s so slow as to be unusable. Windows is now so actively hostile that it’s time to make the jump.
Uhm, but why NixOS?
Guaranteed reproducible builds
I know people who are still trying to find bypasses so they can use their audio in Linux.
Time for them to switch to Windows.
In the 10-ish years I use Linux, I’ve never had any sound issues. I really don’t get how people think this is still an issue.
Time to switch to a Linux distro that works. There’s plenty good ones out there, your people must be picking the shit ones… Or compiling their own and badly.
Any distro that uses Pipewire (most at this point) is incredibly stable with the audio setup.
PulseAudio was a bit rough at the beginning, but it got much better. But Pipewire at this point is hands down amazing.
