  • That is very true. It doesn’t mean it is ethical. It is quite common for people who are disabled, have a disease, or what not to be overly optimistic about success. Which caused them to be more willing to make poorly informed decisions.

Experiments like these are not inherently bad, but it is very easy to receive informed consent from the participant when they are not fully informed. That is why studies like this in academia require an ethics panel to review them.

To give an Elon musk’s track record with his various companies. I think it is completely reasonable to question the ethics of this study.

  • Umm so it doesn’t get cold in Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, the Gobi Desert, Northern China, etc.?

I have no idea how it plays between northern and southern Europe but there’s no way that the cold environment has anything to do with this it gets equally as cold if not colder in some parts of Asia. Plus many of those places don’t have the abundance of resources that would be provided by the forests or coasts of Northern Europe.

  • Okay this is actually a perfect eastern vs western philosophy debate hidden in a taco.

I am going to make some very broad strokes here. So no armchair quarterbacking me. I know it’s way more nuanced but I’m not writing an essay on Lemmy.

In general Western philosophies always have a “goal.” Your human life is to prove your worthiness. You need to look back and atone for your past mistakes. You need to look forward so you can do the right things to be worthy. It is very little about being in the now.

Eastern philosophies are much more about being aware of the moment. The past has happened it cannot be changed you should not worry about it. The future doesn’t exist so there’s no need to focus on it. The only thing you can affect is the very moment in time you’re in and the only way to affect it is through your actions.

In this case tacos are the moment. So next time you’re eating a delicious taco. Spend that moment to be one with your taco. Concentrate on the smell. Then feel the texture as you pick it up. How the various colors interact with each other. Then as you bite off some, feel the textures in your mouth and how the flavors interact. Watch yourself, be aware of every time you chew. Remember there is no past there’s no future there is only tacos.

  • Honestly, things like the I-9 and SS numbers are just not very secure and are only usually audited after the fact. Especially if the employer doesn’t really care to look too hard at an ID.

The I-9 is just kept on file by the employer and only needs to be made available to ICE if requested. The only requirement of verification of identity with I-9 is the employer must examine the documents and they must reasonably appear genuine and reasonably appear to relate to the person.

So if anybody says the I-9 is to help reduce illegal employment it’s not, it’s there to pretend to help reduce illegal employment.

As for social security numbers. There is no security around the numbers besides just not telling people your number. The social security administration doesn’t have time or personnel to double check payroll taxes.

Oh and lastly I’m sure the IRS secretly likes it when illegal immigrants are employed with a W-2. Illegal immigrants are never going to file their taxes they are too scared that somebody might notice. So they never get a refund it just becomes money in the bank for the government.

Just to continue my tirade a large portion of illegal immigrants in America are gainfully employed with a W-2. They pay taxes, they pay payroll taxes, sales tax when they buy things, fuel tax when they fuel their vehicle, and vicariously property taxes from whoever they are renting from. They never use government services, they are not getting food stamps, medical assistance, temporary funds for needy families, etc, and will never get a social security payout.

Anyway I’m going to go now before I keep typing.

  • Really. Most people just want their computer to do Internety things. Some officey things, and then show them a film.

If someone doesn’t get those pretty easy the first try they are going to head back to their corporate masters.

Honestly most of us really just need the same thing. I have run a number of different distros, and yeah Arch is really fun. The thing is I realized I just need the basics and I want free time. So I came full circle and went back to Mint. Is it one of the most vanilla flavors of Linux? Absolutely, but it usually just works and I appreciate that now in my life.
