I really like my job but if they started monitoring my data like that I’d absolutely quit. There’s already a monitoring mechanism, it’s called your boss needing you to complete tasks on time. If you’re doing that, the only thing data monitoring does it falsely call out people who are doing their work.
Makes me wonder if we could get an open source Google-style ad platform that only works in the fediverse and directly funds whoever’s server is being used.

I’m apparently the only person who didn’t like Conan on Hot Ones. Felt so forced to me. Conan is so good at the long form interviews and conversations and he doesn’t need prepared bits, I wanted a deep and delving conversation. Wonder if Conan was insecure about being on the receiving end of questions for once.
The thing I’ve heard is, think of how when you’re a mile away from each neighbor, it’s your tax dollars paying for the road, sewer, sidewalks, water, electric, gas lines, for a half mile in each direction. Initially and for maintenance and replacements. That’s why a lot of rural areas just don’t have sidewalks or fiber internet or sometimes they’re using well water.
In a city duplex, you’re paying half the utilities for like 20 feet in front of your house.
It just is more efficient to live closer together, the reason cost of living goes up is because everyone wants to live in the city and employers want that supply of workers so they try to get in or close to the city too and it’s a virtuous cycle of concentration. But housing supply being what it is, and all the jobs being nearby, means housing prices go up. Still worth it to most people hence why there’s still demand, but higher than living in a place with fewer jobs and amenities.

The stock market itself isn’t the problem either though, it’s that the wealthy have money and the poor do not. If you want to buy a house and you don’t have the cash for it, you need to borrow from someone…and that means someone who has a lot of money. And you’ll pay interest for the privilege because there is a time value of money. That doesn’t go away without a stock market.
The real solution is to tax the wealth itself, either directly or through taxing the step-up in value after the owner of a stock dies, or a massively increased estate tax.

And even if there was an election of some kind it’s not like there is a major geopolitical rival known for their cyber crime capabilities with intense national interest in getting someone elected who would let them permanently take over vast swaths of a neighboring country.

Thats what Kevin McCarthy did and he got ousted. Much as it would solve things to actually be the House leader and not just the leader of two minority factions that don’t like each other, the House was set up such that the majority party runs things alone.
If that is what they said, it would be hypocrisy. The cliche is “X for thee and not for me” so the claimed hypocrisy is that he is censoring others and not himself for saying the same things. That isn’t the issue, as you point out the issue is that he is censoring when he said he wouldn’t.
I hate this little thought terminating cliche. It’s trying to make everything into hypocrisy which it isn’t. Say he banned everyone who ever said anything pro Israel…you can fairly apply that rule across all people, and have disparate impacts.
The problem isn’t that he’s censoring others but not himself, it’s that the rule itself is bad on its face.
