  • Just a heads up that this topic makes some people feel really uncomfortable to think about.

It’s because I don’t think the “self” exists either. Without a self there’s nothing that even could make decisions to begin with. I don’t believe in some “entity” or a “soul” somewhere inside our heads, behind our faces, looking out into the world and making independent decisions. We’re not authoring our thoughts and actions. They’re just appearing. You don’t know what you’re going to think next, and you can’t think of a thought before you think it. You can even observe this happening in real time by just paying close enought attention.

We’re biological beings that consist of matter, and matter obeys the laws of physics. “Free will” as in “I could’ve done otherwise” doesn’t make any logical sense to me. If we could go back in time we’d all do the same things all over again. That’s how deterministic universe works. The key factor here is consciousness. It feels like something to be. The sense of free will is probably useful belief for survival, but for the very least I’d argue that it’s not like most people think it is.

  • I’d develop a pickup truck that would have only the bare essential features and would be built from the ground up with the intention to make it extremely durable and easy to fix. Instead of a body-on-frame I’d probably go with a stainless steel exoskeleton instead and plastic/fibre glass panels you could just swap out to a new ones if you damage them. Kind of like on side-by-sides. The newer models then would just be ones with certain parts that have been upgraded to a better ones and would be 100% compatible with older models. You wouldn’t ever need to buy a new truck again. Ideally there would be both diesel and electric versions - ideally so that you could convert one into another if you so desire.

  • This is just grasping at straws.

Before video games we were blaming rock music and Marilyn Manson for violence. This is just stupid. The only ones guilty here are the perpetrators and the society that failed to catch them falling in between the cracks and gave them easy access to firearms. There have always been people with murderous aspirations and always will be. The weapon of choise is just a tool and a force multiplyer. They likely would have used a tactical nuke if they had access to one. They didn’t so an assault rifle was the next best choise. Focusing on AR-15 is ridiculous. They’ll use what ever the best thing is they have access to.
