I’m a nurse and reddit has a nursing subreddit I like to contribute to because they give good advice regarding my job, how to deal with arrogant doctors, bitchy coworkers… they know things a regular user in a generic channel couldn’t answer, because they don’t know the job.
I think asking in a channel like this for nursing advice doesn’t make much sense, because this is not a nursing specific channel.
Something similar happens to my workplace questions: there is an antiwork lemmy, but the one in reddit is much larger and they also have a work community, and so far I haven’t found anything like that on lemmy.
Another issue is size: For some problems, like violence in the hospital I need speedy advice and I get that faster when the communities are larger. Reddit is larger.
Simply replying ‘we don’t monetize’ while true and one reason why I turned to lemmy and don’t use reddit as much now, is not convincing enough for my particular case.
Why not use both? I still use Reddit for game communities that haven’t developed on lemmy. Right now Lemmy is useful for different things, though I hope it continues to grow.

Last I checked, old.reddit.com was still functional and made the web interface not completely suck. It’s useful if you need to dig some bit of info out of the place, which is sadly still necessary from time to time.

That was my plan, but I failed to do it as I just patched Sync for Reddit lol, still I use Sync for Lemmy more.
Lemmy will grow, but for right now it does not meet every need. Perhaps it never will. Especially with lives and livelihoods on the line, you must do whatever works best for you, so please do not feel guilty.
Relatively new Lemmy user here, longtime reddit user. I saw a comment last week that sums this up. Lemmy just hasn’t yet reached the critical mass to have spawned the niche groups that reddit has; certainly not with the activity they have.
I suspect that, for a while, many of us will keep one foot in reddit for those niche communities. In the meantine, we can try to foster similar commities in Lemmy.

Lemmy problem is lurkers and not the number of user in general. It’s not normal to have communities with over 1000 followers where only admins are posting and commenting

I feel you. I’ve been pretty much the only poster 1-3 times a day for months trying to keep the group going.
I’d love just one other person who could post maybe 3 times a week to take the pressure off a little.

I look at the Lemmy.World Communities page, and I’m on the front page sorted by Users/Month. I’m bordered by what I would consider some very big groups, and I just think, am I doing good or is Lemmy doing that bad outside a few major players?
It feels like a busy place to me, because I’m putting the work in. But when I go to some of the things I’d think would be popular, they come up blank for Top 6 Hours. Even c/Dogs, when I made a crosspost there the other day didnt have anything for the day. I expect that to be way busier than SuperbOwl. I used to hang at Beehaw for the positive vibes, but when I would sort by Local, there’s be like 10 posts with no comments for the day, so I stopped signing on.
I really want this to work. I like the smaller setting, I like recognizing the names of the regular commentors, but a channel can’t be a one person show forever. I just feel it would get stale. I feel it still has the potential though. I feel my activity and comments per subscriber is much better than the Reddit version. They have 435000 subs and their upvote averages and comments per thread are not proportionately bigger than what I get with 2400.
I never posted at Reddit because I felt I couldnt stand out among millions of users. It isn’t hard to post, just share something you like. I do some in depth posts and will research stuff and all that, but still many posts are, hey, here’s a cool photo. People just have to step up if they want this place to stay around. It isn’t hard, it isn’t more time consuming than just scrolling through everything. Just try it and be the change you want to see.
Out of these 1000 followers, how many are still active? The 99-9-1 rule is probably valid here too

You’re being generous. I’m part of a lot of communities that are clearly not being moderated.
My take, be pragmatic. I still go to my city and career subreddit because that’s where I get my city news and career advice. And I’m in Lemmy because it really does feel like the Reddit of 2008-2014 and I love it here.
I don’t think you need to leave Reddit. The whole Spez debacle was frustrating, but Reddit just has so many more specific niches. I use Lemmy for most things now, but I use Reddit occasionally for my specific niche subs like that. It’s ok.
I try to avoid Reddit, but there are definitely niche communities and conversations I miss. I still poke my head into those specific communities at Reddit now and again, but don’t engage in them much anymore.
At the same time, I try to spark those same conversations over here.
No reason we can’t do both!
I’m helping with a handful of healthcare communities here and… I agree! Career communities are helpful and the health career communities on Reddit are especially so. They’re well moderated and the discussions are productive. As much planning and care we might put into the Lemmy ones, it will take time to get that kind of crowd sourced support.
More on that: !medicine@mander.xyz is being run as a parallel community for r/medicine, and we’re in communication with the mods there. We haven’t announced things in a big way yet (everyone got busy), but the goal was for this very situation
Right now my advice is to use both
- Post on Lemmy as you can, and post to Reddit for the time sensitive / important stuff
- Read feeds from both

There is a good radiology community here. Which means the medical community you are looking for is here.
You can always start the community your looking which will be slow but will grow. Just becareful how you mention it on reddit as I’ve heard people get banned for promoting lemmy on reddit.
I would like to see more lemmy posts out in the wild. Mostly its reddit links that popup on searches
I’ll tell you my approach and you can use it for inspiration, but keep in mind everyone is different.
I deleted the Reddit app, but still use Reddit sometimes through the browser. This caused me to use Reddit far less, and primarily use lemmy unless what I need is not found on lemmy.
Sometimes what I need is info from a specific community like you mentioned. For example, I am Arab, and there’s very few Arabs on lemmy.
In your case, Reddit might be less rare than me. It might be more practical for you to use both apps, or maybe just not use lemmy at all. It all depends on your priorities and what you’re looking for.
Don’t hamstring your career over this.
The reason Spez’s bullshit is tragic is because reddit is extremely useful. Use the technology that benefits your job the most.
I vomit poison on Adobe and their horrible subscription model. But if my boss says we’re using photoshop then I’m 100% onboard, all-in. Because jobs and careers are dynamically important and poverty is dynamically corrosive.
Don’t overthink it. If reddit is professionally useful, nobody else’s opinion matters. You can contribute to other platforms, but not at the cost of your career or your patients or colleagues.
Your first problem isn’t using Reddit. It’s asking others for their opinion on whether or not you should.
If you need to use Reddit, that’s your justification. Don’t worry about what people here think.

Fediverse is slowly becoming Reddit 1.5 anyways - I actually went back to Reddit after not being able to find a few work- and hobby-related communities on the fediverse.
Ya I’ve got the same issue, I really miss the expansive discussions in the comment sections and niche communities, I think over time they’ll pop up. Lemmy is great but still has lots of growing up to do.
nobody’s judging, I sometimes shamelessly click on some reddit links in google results, I just try to not interact, i don’t think it’s a shame to use reddit if lemmy doesn’t suit your needs, i mean there’s your validation if you need it, it’s your life
Naturally, Lemmy as it is. It cannot fulfill everyone’s needs.
I’m in the same boat, I left Reddit as soon as that crap happened but I still went back because there’s some niche that’s not at the present in Lemmy sadly.
But I do try other options before Reddit. You could try and look around but don’t feel guilty if you resort to Reddit.
